So Adolin is carrying an Edgedancer's Shardblade. Now, this is interesting because at a time when almost everyone ignores their deadblade, he takes the time to listen to his.

It's as though that's one of the Edgedancer oaths or something.

I'm not going anywhere with this I just think it's friggin' cool. And... maybe important later if we learn how to restore deadeyes?

I thought the same thing - that it can't be a coincidence that he is getting closer to reviving his dead Shardblade than anybody in Rosharan history, while exhibiting the very ideals the Blade was originally meant to further. I will remember those who have been forgotten... I will listen to those who have been ignored.

Yeah, and it really feels like he's started doing the listening bit well with Shallan recently as well. His ability to find her specifically- through Veil and Radiant- has been a really nice character development thing for the hopeless flirt of book one.

Actually, that kind of fits with the whole I will remember those who have been forgotten Ideal, since Shallan spends most of Oathbringer trying to forget Shallan Davar.

Edit: And yes, I also think it is friggin' cool.

You make an excellent point.

So does that mean at some point he will "remember" about investigating Sadeas'mysterious death? Hmmm

It's an 11 page thread, but this is pretty heavily delved into... And hotly debated, here.

As you'll no doubt notice in that thread, I fully believe that Adolin's actions and Maya's state as an Edgedancer blade are much much more than coincidence.

Brandon has said that his habit of talking to his Shardblade is important, and we have seen why.

He calls her a friend even before he knows her name. That shows how much he cares about her.

There's also this older 15 page thread on the subject, with all fresh just-after-release reactions on it (and the exact same title as this thread):

I absolutely agree with that statement. Some people want to say the perpendicularity was responsible for the events, but I think that's kind of a stretch.

There has to be a bond forming if he can hear her.

I take it a little further. There has to be a bond forming for her to be able to speak.

I just hope whatever Brandon does with this storyline, he doesn’t just turn Adolin into a plain ol’ Radiant. I kind of like that he is the “mortal” one of the group. There is opportunity here to do something interesting.

Just spit balling here... what if... Maya returns to sentience because of Adolins constant love and attention. Since he was the one making the overtures, in essence, Adolin is the “Spren” who bonded the Radiant. So what if Maya becomes a Shadesmar “Radiant” (I’m sure her awakening in Shadesmar will be a big deal amongst the rest of the Spren), and she has the ability to summon Adolin to Shadesmar and Adolin becomes a weapon when materializing in the Spren world.

I realize that’s pretty unrealistic... even by fantasy standards. Just really hoping we get something clever and that they use the unusual nature of a Spren rising from the dead as a way to differentiate Adolin from the KR’s not just make him another one of them.

The Nahel bond is a symbiotic bond. It flows both ways, not one. The Spren gain presence and sapience in the physical realm, the human gains the surges and access to Stormlight.

It is a merging of souls, not just one attaching to the other.

I think that Adolin will eventually become a Radiant by this process, but probably not until either book 5 or the back half. In the meantime, he will be something unique.

I believe that something else needs to happen for him to become a Radiant. What that is... No idea. Until that point he may get to summon his Blade faster, or perhaps even have it begin to change shape. Eventually though... A Nahel bond is a Nahel bond.
