Doesn't Taln still have super speed when saving Amaram from the Ghostbloods? I think that indicates he still has the Honorblade, wouldn't it? At that point in the story, hadn't Dalinar already bonded with the blade in the cave?

Naw, that's just his Herald abilities. WoB says that Heralds without their blade still have other things going on for them. That's how they are all still alive even though only one is confirmed to have gone back for his blade.

What makes you think that Szeth has met a Herald?

Well Szeth was declared a Truthless for an unknown reason, but when he encounters Kaladin he begins to believe that he didn't deserve that punishment. He couldn't be Truthless for being a Surgebinder because his Windrunner powers came from the Honourblade, so either he took the Honourblade or he somehow learnt that a Desolation was coming.

Assuming that he didn't just take the Honourblade (which I'm not ruling out, but it seems like the less interesting option) or that taking an Honourblade doesn't work, as per the WoB that says you can only be given one, then the question becomes the source of the Desolation prediction, and the number of sources for that information is pretty limited. A god, a worldhopper or a Herald, pretty much. And who better than a Herald to give a warning about the True Desolation?

Besides, in the prologue we have two people arguing about Szeth who are most likely Heralds, saying that they did something to him. Which might rule out it being Jezrien but it does suggest that Szeth has crossed paths with Heralds in the past.

Fair enough. I suspected Szeth discovered something about the return of the Voidbringers, but it was not a very strong suspicion.

Also a possibility. My reasoning above is based on things we know, but it's easy to forget that there are lots of things we still don't know that could also explain it. Unmade and Ten Deaths and all sorts. :D

Lift interlude:

So either Lift is mistaken, or Darkness is surgebinding.  Of course, if he's surgebinding, that doesn't mean he has his honorblade, since he could possibly surgebind by himself.

We also have a WoB that Hoid did not switch the blades (Taln's Honorblade/Dalinar's blade).  Doesn't mean he didn't take it, of course ;)

Consuming Stormlight is not the same thing as Surgebinding. The enhanced speed could just be a product of Stormlight. It is also possible that the Heralds only need their blades to have access to the Surges, not Stormlight.

Additionally, it has been theorized that some, if not all, of the Heralds are worldhoppers, so it is also possible that they have accessed other magic systems. There is certainly evidence that they are not native to Roshar, so the speed could be related to their other abilities..

There is? All I've seen is speculation.

And the Heralds predate the creation of humans on Roshar and the arrival of Honor and Cultivation?

I wouldn't assume it's the "creation" of humans on Roshar. I'm in the camp that they moved there, which is decently well supported with the Tranquelline Halls mythology and all. Being immortal, it's very plausible that Heralds predate that move.

Doing a quick search of the WoB I did not find the post that states that a herald returned for his blade but----

I was just re-listening to WoR for the third time and I came to the portion where Szeth is speaking to Mr. T.      Mr. T says that one of the honorblades has gone missing and Szeth questions him. One of the other seven in Shinovar?

Szeth did not subtract the 1 missing from the 7 remaining he knew about.

so you have Talenelat's           = 1

  Szeth/Kaladin's                      = 1

WoB herald that retrieved his  = 1

Mr. T's "missing blade"            = 1

that leaves 6 so yes there is a Honorblade unaccounted for.
