[OB] So are the humans on Roshar from the Selish system?

Question

Posted

First time poster here, So now we know that the humans came from a world where odium was destroying in order to escape (making them the voidbringers) and we know that odium is known for having killed or broken Devotion and Dominion (who are both from the selish system) buuuuut in the arcanum unbound it mentions that they were killed before humans or in the humans prehistory (if i am remembering it correctly). So to my question;

Do we think that the humans in Roshar are from Selish or has it been confirmed they are from somewhere else?

Thanks,

A friend of mine wanted me to ask: Was the cataclysm that rocked Ashyn and forced its inhabitants into the flying cities Investiture-based, and if it was was it Shardic in nature?

The same cataclysm that the-- did you finish [Oathbringer]?

Questioner [PENDING REVIEW]

Yes.

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

The same cataclysm that they were fleeing, that they caused, is the one that forced people into the skies...

As the WoB that Shqueeves just posted says, humans on Roshar are from within the same system.

Three planets, Ashyn, Braize, and Roshar. The human inhabitants of Roshar fled from Ashyn after it was devastated.

Which makes sense. In the event of a planetary evacuation, your not going to have a lot of supplies to support anyone for a long journey. They went somewhere close.

thanks everyone! i wonder how odium got to ashyn then since i thought they were kinda tied to the planets or systems they were in.

Or is that something that is unique to odium that lets him travel when the others do not?

Ashyn is in the same system.

Additionally, shards invest into a planet through staying there over time. It occurs naturally. Odium never settled anywhere until he was forced to in the Greater Roshar system. He'd have trouble picking up and leaving now, but back then it wasn't a problem.

In addition to what Calderis said, all of the Shards can travel wherever they want. However, there's fine print to that...

Once they're Invested in a planet, they have two options(that we know about):
1) Rip themselves away from the tied-down chunk of their power and leave immediately. Unknown consequences for the world, and it's not a pleasant experience for the Shards to go through. It also weakens them, as they are operating with say.. 75% of their total power. This is why Odium took great care never to get tied to a planet.
2) Spend time and effort collecting that power, so they can leave whole. This would have big consequences for anything on the planet using their Investiture, among other things. It would also divide the Shard's focus, and make them temporarily weaker(they are using some of their power to collect the rest). This is one reason why Odium hasn't just done this and left Roshar.
