SallyA she/her Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Just some musings to see if there is anyone of like mind about. Always interested in theories. The Shardes were created to fight monsters of stone, correct? But then the enterprising humans create Fabrials and Shardplate and make new monsters of stone to prosecute their own ends within their realm. By again imprisoning Spren. In Elantris, once a showplace of power, then a showplace of power overthrown, there are hints of the Gifting of Power from "higher" sources by use of the Aon, drawn with light, which might signify a sacrifice of Stormlight in drawing the Aon, and thereby satisfying some pre-existing agreement? Yet in fallen Elantris, the Seon suffers a massive loss of it's dedication, or of it's purpose . . wandering aimlessly, without direction. Perhaps inhibited? Prohibited? The Aon were carved into the walls of the city -- visual communication with The One Beyond? . . Was Elantris a concatenated navel of power? Its requests to The One Beyond carved into the walls -- honored!!? When time(?) or loss of virtue (?) -- "took the city" --- away from the power to connect to The One Beyond, did that cause it's fall? This would be in the structure of the Cosmere itself, or in a change in the nature of humanit? And asside, the parshmen took dull form fo escape their gods (truth or sweeping lie?) Parshmen perhaps used as souls to grant boons, until the wheel had turned, a new lord or order arrived on scene? I have to finish Elantris, so maybe I am creating my own spoiler, but maybe I won't visit again until I have finished! This is close to the magic powers of the Egyptians, the very Early Celts, and likely others. And the worldwide language of the Old World was broken by the flood, no walls of letters left hanging around today. Book = Snowcrash Visual contact, loss of virtue (?), and then the spoken word, spoken aloud in the form of Oaths .. to allow a continuation of the blessings of The One Beyond? I see I will have to read the expensive book! Later on. -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ For the Language folks, I offer the web site: meru dot org, where the Hebrew Language is discussed, and there are amazing animations which will delight your brain cells! If you are into Sumerian, there is Garry Zeitlin on the web and others -- plus the language is now computerized, and the database is free. For the old factoid folks, the book Yorro Yorro is about the coming of The Serpent, The Dreamers, and the tribes of the Australian Kimberly … small book at your library, very informative. There is a Mayan codex on the arrival of these folk as well, they walked the land and renamed many locations! Off Worlders? The importance of dynasties and extended families, and surviving from one age to another . . . :-) Location, occupation, attitude:
Calderis he/him Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Aons are not reliant on Stormlight Elantris takes place on a different world than Stormlight. It is on the planet Sel, not Roshar. 1
SallyA she/her Posted January 29, 2018 Author Posted January 29, 2018 (edited) Thank you. I missed that, will have to be more attentive. Still the descriptions of the Elantrians and the Shard bearers are very, very similar. Thus I drew the conclusion. Could it be possible that Aons are the Elantrian access point to the power of Stormlight (by that or any other name? I am thinking Chi, here.) . . . Elantris is the second choice of a name for this planet (story), too. °•° ___ Is this a subtle request not to tangle Brandon's creative Universe with the common understandings of the mundane mortal realm? If so, please reply and I will alter my "on board" approach to his material. Mr. Sanderson is an amazing author, and surely a mind and soul to match and his creation is to be honored. I just have certain proclivities, and if they are out of place here, I will rein them in.l 5,198 posts (0.0).... Woot! . . thank you for the first reply! Edited January 29, 2018 by SallyA question . . . and spelling (!)
PhoenixQuill Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 @SallyA The power that you are speaking of in the Cosmere is called investiture. It shows up in many different forms, depending on a number of factors, including planet, and magic system. Also, how much do you know about the Cosmere?
SallyA she/her Posted January 29, 2018 Author Posted January 29, 2018 LOL, I am a total newbie, just began reading this January ... what a lovely new year's gift to receive by some kindly happenstance of serendipity! I was amazed by The Stormlight Trilogy! Investiture is given to those accepted to power, though . . so even Kaladin's Squires "became invested"? Interesting concept. Of course only the Priest class in Egypt built Temples. They and the Pharoahs . . They also used the visual method. Thank you, and I am now reading Elantris, ... which offering should I read for February? (read Arcanum Unbounded) . . . One that will fill in some more of the basic conceptual framework of the Cosmere.
RShara she/her Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 After Elantris, I would suggest Mistborn Era 1, then Era 2, then Secret History. After those, Warbreaker, then Arcanum Unbounded. Each major novel is set on its own world, with it's own form of investiture and magic, though. And each novel is self-contained, so you won't see, say, Stormlight, playing a major factor on Elantris or Mistborn's planets. 1
Calderis he/him Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 I wasn't intentionally ignoring your responses. If you want to get someone's attention, it's helpful to either quote a portion of their post you wish to respond to, or ping them with that @ symbol, followed by their username such as @SallyA. The stories set in the Cosmere are all currently self contained, but they do have some Easter egg style crossovers and underlying mechanics that are shared. Sel, the world on which both Elantris and The Emperor's Soul are set, is a special case though. It's magic source, The Dor, is contained in the Cognitive Realm of that world. Due to this its magics are location dependent unlike all other magic in the Cosmere. The things you are thinking about are completely along that right lines, your just lacking the knowledge from the books. With the way your already looking at things, once you learn more I'm sure you'll pick up on many of the clues placed, and the underlying mechanics I've already mentioned. I don't want to spoil anything for you, so I won't go into more detail unless you ask, but it's a deep and detailed world. There's a lot we don't yet understand. 1
SallyA she/her Posted January 29, 2018 Author Posted January 29, 2018 25 minutes ago, Calderis said: don't want to spoil anything for you, so I won't go into more detail unless you ask, but it's a deep and detailed world. There's a lot we don't yet understand. I certainly can second that, I find life every bit as daunting to comprehend as the Cosmere. Thanks for your help. I would ask one more time, however, if it would be more "seemly" to not drag the mundane mortal world in with cross references . . . Somehow this seems potentially annoying for other board members ... .... to that end, is there a link explaining how to put hidden information headers on the end of a post? . . That way if my synthetic-think is burning holes in my concentration I could limit the impact for other posters. i basically live to study! At this point I have not found a way to turn that around, however. As I am drawing your attention once again (no, did not feel ignored at all) . . I would also ask .... could someone tell Brandon about the Kindle Count Down Deals? He does not need them, but there are many, many readers sampling the heady savings which this offers, and having been one of them (often diappointed with 99cent fare) .. I am thinking there is much to be gained here. Also, Amazon shares profit with authors who are doing well, especially in many countries!
Calderis he/him Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 @SallyA to make a spoiler tag, just click the eyeball at the top of the post box, and it will make a spoiler box. That's at your own discretion though. Many people make links to real life things that they feel are similar or that Brandon may have drawn inspiration from.
