kaduzy she/her Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 Hello. I'm a new member, a comedian by trade and a scifi/fantasy/anime nerd by long habit. I'm a big fan of Mistborn Eras 1 and 2. Hoping to eventually read some of Sanderson's other work. 5
MacThorstenson he/him Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 Welcome to the 17th shard! I see you have read mistborn, do you have a moment to talk about the glorious art of hemalurgy? If so, have a cookie and step into this dark alley!! 1

Totally kidding, as long as it wasn't your soul, those trades don't work out very well in the long run. Welcome to the shard, if you haven't read Stormlight Archives, I truly envy you. The best 84 consecutive hours of your life are still in your future, then you will be like the rest of sods, waiting the next 21 years of your life for CLOSURE. I started the Wheel of Time when I was in high school and didn't get to finish the series until I was middle aged and laid up with a roller skating injury (yeah, I broke my ankle taking my little girls to the skating rink, my ankle snapped like a dry chicken bone). If you are in for the long haul (which I think you should be) then the Storm Light Archives is possibly the best thing you will ever read.
kaduzy she/her Posted January 22, 2018 Author Posted January 22, 2018 (edited) I traded a comfy life as a classroom teacher and international school administrator to be a comedian, but sometimes it does feel like my soul was part of the bargain. It's not an easy life. I have grown more interested in reading his other works, including the Stormlight Archive, since there are now all these links to the Cosmere in the Wax and Wayne stories that I don't fully understand, like the woman who asks Wax all those questions while they're dancing in The Bands of Mourning. I'm sure I'll get to them eventually, but since it's a 10 book series, I'm in no hurry. As you said, waiting years and years is not ideal. I'm already a pathetic GRRM junkie convinced I will never live to read the last words of A Song of Ice and Fire. (Frankly I am convinced he won't live to finish writing the last words himself, either.) So I'm in hurry to submit myself to another unfinished series. Was The Wheel of Time good? At least that one's completed. Edited January 22, 2018 by kaduzy

If you travel a lot for your comedy, you should get the audiobooks for Wheel of Time, there are 14 of them, all 30+ hrs, and they are read by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading (Michael Kramer does the audio books for Mistborn, and Michael Kramer and Kate Reading do the audiobook readings for Storm Light Archive as well). They are two of the very best audiobook readers out there, and they are a married couple in real life, pretty cute. The Wheel of Time is a great series, it's also the series that Brandon Sanderson was brought in to finish after Robert Jordan passed away before the series was completed. Sanderson did an amazing job wrapping up Wheel of Time and I started reading his books because he did such a good job with the last 3 books of WoT. I know how you feel about Song of Ice and Fire, it's hard to wait for the next book, but I hope that GRRM has a long life, he's such an amazing writer and I don't think anyone else could really finish his series, it's just such a product of his individual genius. Also, if you like audiobooks, the first 4 books of SoIAF are read by one of the best audiobook narrators of all times, Roy Dotrice, a welsh actor that does every voice perfectly. His Tyrion Lanister was freaking amazing, sadly he passed away in 2017, but the first 4 audiobooks of SoIaF are some of my favorites of all times. It's always difficult and scary trying something new, I think that's awesome that you are going for it, and wish you the best of luck with your comedy!
kaduzy she/her Posted January 22, 2018 Author Posted January 22, 2018 (edited) Thanks for the kind words. So far people here seem really nice, though I don't get the cookie thing. I appreciate your suggestions, but I never listen to audiobooks of books I haven't read. However, I do like Michael Kramer, and the name Kate Reading sounds so familiar that I'm sure I must have some audiobooks that she narrated somewhere in my collection. As for ASOIF, I have heard all those audiobooks and the fourth one was originally recorded by John Miller if I recall his name correctly, because Dotrice wasn't available. I loved that one, but I understand that fans demanded a Dotrice edition, so a different one was later recorded. Now that Dotrice has kicked the bucket, I hope they bring back John Miller. I hated Dotrice's narration. He constantly called Joff "Jeffrey" and could not for the life of him keep his voices consistent from book to book. The voice he uses for Dany in Book 5 makes her sound like a leprechaun, but she sounds normal in the other books. The voice he used for Melissandre in Book 3 was startling and hard to get used to at first, but I gradually started to like it. Then when she comes back in 5, it's totally different. He also just had a weird, overly theatrical way of speaking that made all his intonations unnatural. I don't want a book to be performed, I want it to be READ. I don't need someone doing 1,000 voices and attempted accents. Dotrice didn't have consistency with anything, not even the accents of people from the same parts of Planetos. John Miller on the other hand, sounds like John Miller from start to finish. That's really all it takes. And that's why I like Kramer. He doesn't go to a lot trouble to change his voice, he just reads. It's fantastic. Edited January 22, 2018 by kaduzy I'm a perfectionist.
TheDwarfyOne Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 (edited) Can highly recommend Wheel of Time. I wouldn't say it's the series that got me into reading fantasy, but it certainly figures largely in my list "Why Fantasy is Great." Said list does not exist, but now I wish it did. Hmmmm... kaduzy she/her Posted January 22, 2018 Author Posted January 22, 2018 (edited) I will have to read it one day. I was aware that Sanderson was the person who finished it, but I was introduced to his work because I was b*tching to someone about not having any good series to read while I waited for the next ASOIAF book, and he handed me his copy of Mistborn and said I would probably love it. I was hooked. Years later I emailed him to ask what he thought of the other books in the series because Wax & Wayne 1 had just been published, and the poor bastard had never even read the other two Mistborn books. Edited January 22, 2018 by kaduzy Apparently we can't curse here?

I understand what you're saying about Roy's inconsistencies, but the gap between books 3 and 4 was 5 years, and the gap between books 4 and 5 was 6 years, and Roy was already pretty old when he recorded Storm of Swords. I love how he did Tyrion, Peter Dinklage is great, but for me, Roy Dotrice's Tyrion will always be how I read and hear that character. What type of comedy are you doing? Are you doing stand-up, comedy writing, or both?
kaduzy she/her Posted January 24, 2018 Author Posted January 24, 2018 Yeah OK there was a huge gap, but come ON. You're telling me he couldn't reply part of those previously recorded audiobooks and practice getting the voices as close to what he'd done before as possible? They probably give him a free copy of the ones he records, or a copy of his recording -- it should have been an easy bit of homework to do, but he just couldn't be arsed. Being old is no excuse. That Book 5 Dany vice is simply unforgivable. When I listened to it a second time to hear the Feast/Dance crossover chapter combination (which is AWESOME, by the way, in case you've never tried it) I skipped some of her chapters. Could. Not. Deal. With it. That said, his voices for Tyrion and Jon were normal and more or less consistent. I had no issues with those. I'm a stand-up comedian. I do write but have had no luck with any of my non stand-up writing. I write my own jokes and material for all my shows though. 1
