+Hoiditthroughthegrapevine he/him Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 (edited) Happy 2018 sharders! So Oathbringer came out in 2017 and not every character made it through to 2018, so in honor of the newly departed, I thought it would be nice to start a Eulogy thread where we can attune the Rhythm of the Lost and express our feelings about the recently departed. Here's a list of Characters that died in OB, starting with all the E characters because there are a lot them (will update as characters that I miss are pointed out) Elhokar Kholin Eshonai Eth (Last Name?) Evi Kholin Noro Sah Beard Jezrien Aesudan Kholin Meridas Amaram I'll start with Jezrien's death scene and his final words: Quote "Have you seen me?" the man asked as Moash knelt. "No," Moash said, then rammed the strange golden knife into the man's stomach. The man took it with a quiet grunt, smiled a silly smile, then closed his eyes. "Were you really one of them?" Moash asked, "Herald of the Almighty?" "Was, was, was..." The man started to tremble violently, his eyes opening wide. "Was...no. No, what is this death? What is this death!" Huddled forms stirred, and some of the wiser ones scuttled away. "It's taking me!" the man screamed, then looked down at the knife in Moash's hand. "What is that?" The man trembled for a moment more, then jerked once, going motionless. When Moash pulled the yellow-gold knife free, it trailed dark smoke and left a blackened wound. The large sapphire at the pommel took on a subdued glow. And here is the inbook Eulogy by Brandon, which is really nice: Quote These broken slaves were the only other witnesses to this moment. The final death of Jezrien. Yaezir. Jezerezeh E'lin, king of Heralds. A figure known in myth and lore as the greatest human who had ever lived. And of course, here is the beautiful painting of Jezrien by Howard Lyon, Rest in Peace Jezrien, hopefully your soul is now at peace. *Edited* Added another E character, Evi as pointed out by @Toaster Retribution Edited January 1, 2018 by hoiditthroughthegrapevine 2
Kaleid Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 Rest in Peace, Eshonai. Explorer, Philosopher, Hope of a Falling Race - your soul is now as free as your spirit longed to be. 1

But she went to the great beyond, and there's no greater mystery to explore than what is behind the veil of death, explore the infinite beyond Eshonai, you were a leader and a hero to your people, but your burden is now lifted and your soul is set free. 1
Toaster Retribution he/him Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 @hoiditthroughthegrapevine You missed Evi, whose death we got to witness in OB. And then, since no one else will do it properly, I will take upon me the burden to give Highlord Meridas Amaram a proper farewell (euolgies isn't really my thing, so this is probably bad, and long): Meridas Amaram was a man who was raised with the ambition of achieving greatness. He was a man who had good intentions. He was a man with a pretty cool name. He was kind to his servants, and is the only man ever to be progressive through the collecting of flutes. Unfortunately, Meridas Amaram was also a man who had the dumbest plan since the days of Blackadder. He was a man who went a bit too far to achieve his goals. And he will forever be remembered as the guy who grew gemstones in unfortunate places. May he be the hero he wanted to be in the next realm. 5
Kaleid Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 1 hour ago, Toaster Retribution said: Evi Evi - you were too good for this world. Married to a monster, you kept your spirits high and refused to intimidated. You never let his darkness dim your light. And when your sons asked about their father, you did not tell them of the sickening side of a man who killed for pleasure, but rather painted the picture of the honourable and decent role model you knew was within. You never let your Morality fade. When all others saw only the Blackthorn, you saw Dalinar Kholin within - and in doing so, you turned a monster into the greatest of men - and likely saved the world in the process. You also raised two terrific, and almost polar opposite children, honing their Passions to allow them to become the very best possible versions of themselves. The histories will not remember you beyond a footnote. But we all know that there is a reason your husband and son both became Radiants - they absorbed the Radiance that shone from within your soul. Rest in Peace, Evi Kholin. We barely knew ye. 4
+Hoiditthroughthegrapevine he/him Posted January 1, 2018 Author Posted January 1, 2018 @Kaleid that is truly beautiful! And the fact that her last act in OB is to forgive Dalinar just reinforces what an amazing person she was. The world is dimmer place without her light, but just like Adolin's name means born unto Light, her light shines on in the world through her children and the man that her husband became. This is my favorite part by far, actually got a little teary reading this. 1 hour ago, Kaleid said: The histories will not remember you beyond a footnote. +Hoiditthroughthegrapevine he/him Posted January 2, 2018 Author Posted January 2, 2018 @Toaster Retribution, I too was sad to see Amaram go. I will take a stab as well at giving him a Eulogy, but lets imagine that this is happening amongst his friends, fellow members of the Sons of Honor: Here lies the earthly remains of Meridas Amaram, a man of internal strength, a man of conviction, a man who sacrificed all for his ideals. He was truly a Son of Honor, bound by rules he accepted, capable of doing the right thing, even though his conscience pained him. He died as he lived, honorably. His goals were goals not for his own personal advancement or glory, but the for the good of Roshar and all mankind. He took the path less traveled, and through this journey he sacrificed all to attain his ends, most important of which was Restoring Honor to the world. But, like tears that fall into the sea, his life's work was lost. Honor was already dead. In a world without Honor what choice did he have but to fight for the original inhabitants of Roshar, the Singers. History will paint him as a villain, but his was a life of idealistic purity, his was a life of singular purpose, cut short by the vicissitudes of a Cosmic struggle in which we are all but pawns. Sleep well Meridas, and may you find Honor in the Great Beyond. By the way, I am totally serious about this. Amaram operated from the false assumption that all of his actions would bring Honor back to the world, a very worthy goal. And the decision to kill Kaladin's spearman squad was a decision made by Restares, that Amaram actually felt guilty about. That's the amazing thing about the SLA, even the greatest of villains is truly sympathetic, and really the difference between a villain and hero comes down to the decisions they make in life...Hmmm, kiind of like real life.
