Kered he/him Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Part 3 Spoilers ahead? As I was finishing part three, I noticed something odd that Vivenna said. Located on page 1155 of the eBook Quote “And the one who brought it to your land. A Shardblade that bleeds black smoke.” Azure turned toward her. “I don’t mean to be callous, Shallan. I realize you’re all eager to return to your lands. I can even believe that—through some tide of Fortune—Kaladin Stormblessed has foreseen some danger.” Fortune. It is capitalized and used in a way some others in the cosmere have referred to Shards. I'll come back and edit examples, i just want to get this out before I forget. If I'm guessing right and it's not a title used for some Nalthis religious context, then it could be the name of Shard. In her hunt for Nightblood and Vasher it's safe to assume Vivenna has become more cosmere-aware on her path from Nalthis to Roshar. Thus leading her to learn more of Shards and the history and the cosmere. A lot of assuming for something that could be typo or something altogether different. But on the off chance that Fortune is a shard, what do you think it would be like and how it plays in to being a divine attribute?
Plaeggs he/him Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I think Fortune is like Connection, you can store it with Feruchemy otheerwise interact with it as a property of the Cosmere. 3
IndigoAjah he/him Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I think Fortune is capitalised because it's a pancosmeric quality like Investiture or Identity or Connection. In the Cosmere it has more tangibility (not quite the right word...) than mere luck 3
Marethyu316 Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 It is referred to in the final chapter as well. It seems to have something to do with seeing the future. Quote “Taravangian!” Odium said. “This is remarkable.” The walls and furniture faded, leaving behind the words, which hung in the air and started glowing with a golden light. “You did this without access to Fortune, or the Spiritual Realm? Truly incredible.” p.1215 2
Wandering Investor Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 Fortune is a concept present in the cosmere, Spirit Realm 'thing' I think, that affects your luck. It can be stored, making you unlucky, and then tapped again later to increase your luck. 2

As much as the Nightwatcher...
Leyrann Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 Guys... We know from the Feruchemcial chart that Fortune is a Spiritual thing on the same level as Connection, Identity and Investiture, three things we know are something everyone has some degree of and we know can be used for certain stuff. It appears to me, from how Fortune is used in this book and from knowing that Hoid uses something similar to Feruchemical Fortune to know where to go, that Fortune is related to predicting the future. 2
