nelkins Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Well I would say that the next step would be to categorize these magics by their related shard (Honor, Cultivation, and Odium) and the three types of investiture (Positive, Negative, and Neutral). It would seem that there could be at least nine different magic systems going on based on this
Elbereth she/her Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 This is a good idea. Quibbles: I wouldn't say that Shardplate/blade is a magic system in and of itself. Rather, how about the making of Shardblades/Shardplate? Especially as they seem to have been partially duplicated by modern antifabrians. That's also an argument that this would just be a subcategory of Fabrial Science, though. Aimian shapeshifting doesn't really seem to be a magic to me. Magic would imply that only a percentage of the population has access to it while it's implied (correct me if I'm wrong) that all Aimians can shapeshift. You might be right, but I would put a question mark there. I don't think spren expression on the Physical realm counts. That's just two Realms interacting with each other, I think (which, while interesting, is not anything to do with our three Shards/Splinters-of-Shards on Roshar). Death Rattles is not a magic in its own right, but is probably caused by a magic's manifestation. I can't think of a better name for it, though. I like the name Arcanosynthesis. It seems so much more... scientific. I would say, however, that Mr. T's mental state is implied to be part of the Old Magic. That might be incorrect, but it seems likely. That's all I have to say. Very nice.
PorridgeBrick he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Now to organize them. Fabrial -Modern Fabrial Science -Ancient Fabrials -Shardplate/blades? -Spren symbiosis? Racial -Aimian everything -Thrill Individual - Old magic -Memories? -Sprensight Binding -Spren Surgebinding -Voidbinding -Honorblade Surgebinding Misc -Spren -Thunderclasts -Death Rattles 1
Swimmingly he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 Updated a little... Still problems
Swimmingly he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 The Purelaker's magic fish. Notice the question mark.
Swimmingly he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 Also notice the new name for Death Rattles
PorridgeBrick he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Don't we have a WoB on the magic fish being just another animal/spren symbiosis example?
Swimmingly he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 Haven't heard it, but I'll move it over. Wouldn't mind seeing the source if you have it handy.
PorridgeBrick he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 (edited) Just found it. http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/4884-havent-you-always-wanted-magic-fish/ Edited February 18, 2014 by PorridgeBrick 1
PorridgeBrick he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 De nada. Just out of curiosity, what do you mean by "Stormlight Retention Boosts"? I'm probably just being dense here.
Swimmingly he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 I'm making everything intentionally obtuse and sciency. I don't know why. I find it amusing. Anyway, I'm talking about the badass that occurs when you replace your blood with magic and start healing Wolverine-style.
PorridgeBrick he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Oh, okay. I thought you meant ways to increase stormlight retention, rather than boosts that come from stormlight retention. Actually, that's what the Ideals do. Do those count?
PorridgeBrick he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 More Old Magic stuff: wasn't there a guy who was cursed to see everything upside-down?
Swimmingly he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 I decided that that fell under "meh". All she had to do was disconnect his optic nerve, rotate it 180 degrees, and reconnect it. Even if she did it magically... Not important.
Moogle Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I'd argue all the Old Magic stuff does not count as magic, as it seems to be the direct intervention of Shard. Stormlight retention could be described as "replaces blood with Investiture, Investiture perfects you" since it's sort of like Feruchemical gold in that it replaces your need to breath by constantly returning you to a Cognitive ideal (look ma no breathing, just like Miles), but that is by no means confirmed and gets wordy and delves deep into the physics. Voidbringing should be Voidbinding, and I don't think Midnight Essence/thunderclasts count unless you can find some way to work them into the so-called "Ten Levels of Voidbinding". You could mention a Cultivation connection. I'd put thunderclasts under Odium's unknown magic system and note that it seems to be a corruption of the Nahel bond where a spren bonds with a part of the environment and becomes one of the Ten Deaths.
Kadrok she/her Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Axies's immortality is a result of interactions in the magic or some such, so that probably counts.
Swimmingly he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 Old magic results in effects or abilities that, while they vary from person to person, are thematically linked and have a common cause. A good number of magic systems are entirely based on that concept, usually called Knacks, Talents, Gifts, or something like that. I'm calling it magic, even in a hard fantasy like Brandon's.
Asha'man Logain Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Upvote for "Perimortem Vocalizations"
PorridgeBrick he/him Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Just noticed that with all the editing, the honorblades got dropped. Maybe change "Surgebinding" to "Surgebinding (via spren or honorblade)".
