Wreith he/him
So in the Prologue to Oathbringer it is explicitly stated that heating fabrials work by trapping a spren. Quote “It’s what we call a fabrial, a device powered by Stormlight. This one makes warmth. Just a smidge, unfortunately, but my wife is confident her scholars can create one that will heat a room. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? No more smoky fires in hearths.” It seemed lifeless to Eshonai, but she didn’t say so. She hummed to Praise so he’d feel happy telling her of this, and handed it back. “Look closely,” King Gavilar said. “Look deep into it. Can you see what’s moving inside? It’s a spren. That is how the device works.” Did we know that before? It was theorized in the Ars Arcanum, but I don't recall anyone (Navani?) specifically stating it. The focus always seems to be on the stones involved. Do all modern fabrials require a spren to be trapped in their stones? It seems obvious that the older ones don't e.g. soulcasters, oathgates. Unless these shouldn't even be considered fabrials, but I'm not sure what else they'd be called. That would raise some new questions, such as what happens to a spren trapped in the stones for the "Pairing Fabrials" where the stone must be split in two? This thought was triggered in earnest when we learn of a spren that seems intent on warning people of things in chapter 14, reminding me of the alerter fabrial back from the WoK interlude. I feel like I need to do another read through and rethink various applications of fabrials. Edited September 29, 2017 by Wreith
KidWayne he/him
Yeah, I've always been curious where the spren is in a soulcaster fabrial. It was my understanding that all the fabrials of the modern era involved trapped spren, but there's no mention of spren in the ancient fabrials like soulcasters & oathgates. Wreith he/him
I was entirely unaware during my first read. I was sort of conscious of during my second read because I intentionally read the Arcanum first, but even then, I was looking for evidence of it in the story and don't remember any. I don't know... this just feels like news to me I guess.
Ryder
It's mentioned in Navani's notebook if you seen the translations from @Harakeke a few years ago.
