kadengt
I don't know if I still need to put things in spoilers so just in case: Spoiler Just before the assassination attempt on Jasnah, Shallan mentions that the garnet Kabsal had given her had stopped glowing after she used it to soulcast. In chapter 48, though, she hears Jasnah calling for a garnet to soulcast to save Shallan and remembers she has one. This stone should be dead though, with no light in it. In chapter 70 around page 965 Shallan mentions that the garnet has a small glow, meaning most of the light had been used in the soulcasting Jasnah did, but Jasnah couldn't have used that one. Shouldn't the sphere have already been dead, since she mentioned it stopped glowing earlier? it hasn't been able to be recharged at this point. Jasnah could have used another garnet, but the one Shallan had shouldn't be glowing still unless I don't understand how soulcasting works.
Ansalem
My understanding is that for normal soulcasting you would need a particular gemstone to perform a particular soulcasting, but for Shallan and Jasnah they only need stormlight. Jasnah asks for a garnet just to cover up the fact that she can soulcast without a fabrial, but she actually uses stormlight from a different stone. So the fact that Shallan's gemstone had a faint glow afterwards when it was dead before is probably just a typo then?

Oh, I missed that part. Yeah, I'm not sure about that. Maybe Jasnah put her remaining stormlight back into it, which may or may not be a thing they can do. kmosiman
If the stone was used to transfer energy then it could easily have some residue left over. Jasnah may or may not need a Garnet to Soulcast (I suspect she does, otherwise we wouldn't have the Stone/Essence chart). She probably powered the transformation with other charged stones, but the Garnet allows her to transform Blood. When she vaporized the rock to open the passage it cracked the Smokestone in her Soulcaster. Similarly it was mentioned in one of the Listener chapters that they captured an Emerald and could continue to eat. The stone requirement seems to be a limitation on Soulcasting which keeps it from being to powerful.
Fulminato
we have a WoB on the matter INTERVIEW: May 22nd, 2013 Rithmatist Signing Report - StormAtlas (Paraphrased) STORMATLAS I finally got to ask a question about the Stormlight Archive that Windrunner17 and Chaos helped me with which was: "Why Can Kaladin Surgebind with any gem type but Jasnah and Shallan need specific types?" BRANDON SANDERSON A lot of that will be explained as the series comes along. It is really the difference between Soulcasting and the other forms of Surgebinding. It's more a quirk of Soulcasting than it is something that is different about about Kaladin. So you've kind of got it reversed a little bit though; Soulcasting has this additional restriction that the other ones don't.
