Quick Nightblood theory

Ok, In BoM we see Khriss and Nazh's ad that seems to be concerning Nightblood. Since we know that by the time of BoM, it would be in the second half of the stormlight archive. Because of this I believe Nightblood goes missing at some point in the Stormlight archive

It's a fair interpretation. But I don't like it because the ad actually says metal tools, and has a picture of a hammer. Sure it may be a subtle way to get someone with a talking sword to contact you, but they know enough about Nighblood surely to know that's unlikely. If Nightblood talks to you, you either know he's valuable enough to not answer a newspaper ad, or he's murdered you.

I've seen the idea that they're looking for sentient splinters of Harmony (or Ruin / Preservation). If there are splinters and they have a physical aspect, it'll probably be metal. It has serious issues, but I don't have a better idea.

If this is in the second half of SA, it would be after the Warbreaker sequel too for sure.  Maybe in that they awaken more metal things?  Kind of loose speculation, but I did feel like it was referring to Awakening, but maybe not necessarily Nightblood.   Nightblood on Scadrial could do serious damage, I think it would be easier to investigate mysterious deaths than ask people about talking tools.

Well, even if they do awaken more metal, it wouldn't necessarily be something destructive like NB. If I awakened, say, a shovel, I could command it to 'Dig Things' and there would be no need for the insanity of NB. It could just be something commanded to philosophize over everything, and it would by necessity be intelligent. I think that we are equating sentience with destructive potential, but that isn't necessarily the case.

Interesting theory, though I do agree with Extesian's counter-points.

No, no no no no!  "Dig things" is how you end up without planets.  Such an open-ended statement, when given to a sentient being who is incapable of understanding the context and intent of the language, is as rife for abuse as Nightblood's "Destroy evil" command.  (Tangent: Intent matters a great deal with the Oaths of Roshar and in Awakening things in general, so why does it seem to have failed so spectacularly with Nightblood?  The creators of Nightblood would have had to have imbued the Command with the intent of what evil is, but it didn't translate well at all.  Is this because Nightblood became sentient?)

So one day you'd take your NightShovel and tell it to dig a hole so that you could plant some crops, but it just keeps digging.  And digging.  And digging.  Consuming all the investiture around, even any latent bits that might be in the ground or plants.  And it doesn't stop until it runs out of Investiture.  Given an infinite amount, and it'll dig the planet until it's just an asteroid field.  Maybe also some weird things with actively vaporizing the things it comes into contact with.

MUCH more study is needed to use Awakened metals, at least to the degree that Nightblood was, in anything approaching safety.  (I would agree that a shovel is inherently safer than a sword, and concrete commands are safer than nebulous ones.)

Just because it's unusual to get the chance to use this WoB...

Q: What does Nightblood do if he gets fully drawn and runs out of breath and people to eat?
Does he start vaporizing the ground and start boring a hole to the center of the planet?

A: No, he won't. (Good question though.) I'm not sure I want to get into the mechanics of why not, yet. It WAS one of the first things we talked about with Nightblood, though. :)
