Is Hoid a Shard?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone considered that Hoid might be a shard? A shard who somehow managed not to get tied down to a single planet, who found a way to condense all of his shardness into a single humanoid body, and has since been trying to grab pieces of the investiture of the other Shards? I know we have a WoB that says that he isn't quite a sliver, but he also seemed to imply that he isn't quite not a sliver. This might be completely off the mark, but it could be cool: One of the Worldhoppers we all follow is actually a Shard.

Lets keep in mind two things: There is a shard who is simply trying to survive. And there is a shard that isn't tied to a planet.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm no. But worth asking.

Question

What's the other god in Scadrial...Trell… or whatnot... [...] mentioning him, are there other really powerful beings out there that aren't related to the Shards?

Brandon Sanderson

There are possibly really powerful beings, but… how should we say. [long pause] I mean...There are those who would call Hoid a really powerful being, who exist outside Shards, but if you're talking deific level things in the Cosmere, they're all related to the Shards. Or demigod level.

Was Hoid offered one of the Shards we know about.

You know, I can't remember which Shard I've shown you, Wait, no I haven't shown you that one.

@Extesian, where's that last one from?

I'd never seen it before today Pagerunner, it's beautiful. Jan 2015. So could be Ambition? But otherwise must be one we still haven't seen, if I'm remembering dates correctly.

This is my favorite WoB when it comes to Hoid and Shard talk. Peaked my interest.

QUESTION

If Hoid were tempted by a Shard, which one would it be?

BRANDON SANDERSON

Endowment.

Now that I'm re-reading this, could it be Endowment @Extesian? We haven't technically seen the shard/vessel yet, just the influences.

Above is an interview from August 2013.

Ah I'd forgotten about that one. Yeah it is good. I don't believe so though, because he's confirmed that the Voice that calls back Lightsong is Endowment. You can argue we haven't 'seen' that Shard but it's a stretch, that's more than just influence.

I know that we've "interacted with two directly" (the pool in Elantris, and The Voice that called Lightsong back to life) that we've "seen it's power" (Dahkhor??) and another that we've seen their infulence (I have no idea on this one, though I think it might be whatever pointed out Aon Rao in Elantris to Raoden)

BRANDON SANDERSON

Nice guesses on most of those. You've got some things right. You've got some things wrong. The only thing I'll confirm (and I don't think I've said this before) is that The Voice is, indeed, one of the Shards of Adonalsium. (Endowment is that Shard's true name, by the way.)

The other reason is the wording. The 'if' could refer to the fact that he may Gabe taken up a Shard if it was Endowment, but because it wasn't, he didn't.

I can't rule it out though, it's a good connection.

We do have these two quotes in SH from Leras, and I took them fo meaning that Hoid is not a shard.

Quote

“Aaah…” Fuzz said softly. “I had thought that when he rejected the rest of us, he would stop interfering.

Quote

“He stole a bit of my essence, distilled and pure,” Fuzz explained. “It can Invest a human, grant him or her Allomancy.”

Sure, as others have quoted WoBs above, he's been pretty clear that Hoid doesn't hold any shards, and there are implications in both the Letters from SA and in Secret History, like you quoted just there, that he either declined to get involved with or actively opposed the Shattering.
