Has there been discussion about this? The chapter of Jasnah's philosophy lesson, just after the bathing pool bit:

"The scrapings of cremlings climbing out of cracks had become the footsteps of mysterious people from far-off lands. Large-eyed traders from Shinovar, a greatshell rider from Kadrix, or a narrowboat sailor from the Purelake."

Hmm, that didn't seem to get anyone fired up, so let me add some theory crafting.

Shallan can read minds.

Those cremlings were actually a Dysian Aimian or whatever Arclo is, and just by being in their presence, she can piece together memories of where that Aimian has been.

And that same Aimian happened to witness his events in those interludes.

What do you think? How else could she have known about these events?

That's really interesting and I don't think I've seen anyone discuss this before. Maybe it's kind of an easteregg, but with Shallan seeing weird stuff in faraway places that may or may not be but probably is happening who knows?

When she first lightweaves she thinks she imagined the deck being green as well. And the visions of Ash and the sailors (at least I think those were the two she saw) definitely sound supernatural.

Who would the greatshellrider be? That sounds like a very dangerous sport.

We've seen Shallan actually see events from elsewhere, and it came in the form of drawing while she was not consciously doing it.

I think these are just daydreams. The only interlude character that fits is Ishikk and I doubt he's really all that unique.

But greatshell rider from Kadrix? Shin Trader? It seems like she's imagining stereotypes.

I think Shallan has a sensory connection to the cognitive realm, allowing her to "see" spren that are not bonded to her (the cryptids watching Taravangian) and events happening outside her immediate vicinity. She can capture the local conditions (by blinking, including sprensight) for later recall. She may be accessing cognitive "farsight" when she allows herself to draw freely without deliberate intent. She can also mold a kind of cognitive reality (like her "strong" version and Veil) and pull it into the physical realm as well. I suspect if she really trained at it, she'd be great at eavesdropping not just seeing, and be able to create all sorts of sensory impressions beyond hearing and sight.

@iamstick gave you an upvote for being the first person I've seen agree with my idea that Cryptics are observing Taravangian/The Diagram/Death Rattles.

It's the only reason I can think of that Elhokar might be seeing spren in the mirror. (Yes, he's broken enough, but I don't see him as either an Elsecaller or a Lightweaver.)

Shallan also "sees"/draws Shallash defacing (literally) status of herself. I think this may be more than an easter egg, I think it may have something to do with as yet undisclosed abilities. I think she may be able to use this farsight to see things that are important to her/the world. I have no proof of this yet, but BS mentions it a couple times so that if we are paying attention we will notice.

Okay, someone quick do some math. If Windrunner surges are 100% physical realm and Lightweavers are 100% cognitive, does Spiritual play any part in the breakdown, and how does this manifest on the big old surge/order chart?

@iamstick Lol I gave him one for the cool farsight spren idea I'd love for her to be absently drawing a sketch of Kaladin only to see Syl Sticking her tongue out at Shallan on his shoulder

Rysn, from the second set of interludes.

She's Thaylen. Not Shin. They Traded with the shin, but that was a direct trade with a farmer and not a professional trader.

The only shin characters we've seen are a farmer, his soldiers, and Szeth.

  • Thaylen are eyebrow dwarves, who are famous traders.
  • Shin are the pasty balding farmers who worship stone, enslave warriors, and secretly collect honor blades and shard blades.

Easy mistake. The only Shin who's gotten traded on-screen (so to speak) is Szeth, and it was Rysn's master Vstim who did the deal. Rysn's T-Shirt reads: "I silkroaded all the way to Shin and all I got was this stupid potted grass"

Rysn is the name of the chapter, and in it there are Shin traders...

There are Shin who Rysn and her Babsk trade with. Those Shin are a farmer and his soldiers. They are not "Traders." I've sold things, but I'm not a merchant. I've written things but am not an Author.

I still think that she's just daydreaming. The purelake is full of people on narrow boats. The Shin have traders (all those horses), and most importantly we have not seen a greatshell rider or Kradix.

We've seen the ability your proposing happen when in the text when she made the drawings of Yalb and Shallash. I agree she can do what you see, I just disagree that this particular instance was anything more than written.

WotK, chapter 26 "Stillness"

Dalinar stepped back and found himself looking down at the corpses around him, with their blackened eyes. Smoke still curled from a few.
The sick feeling returned. Life ended so quickly. The Shardbearer was destruction incarnate, the most powerful force on a battlefield. Once these weapons meant protecting, a voice inside of him whispered. [...]  Yet their faces—marbled black or white and red—looked so human. A parshman nurse had practically raised Dalinar. Life before death. What was that voice?

we don't know all the actor in the SA. more are to come, and "There's always another secret" after egdedancer we meet another 'faction', but don't think is the last-
