  1. This is a legit theory. Humans are an oddity. *except* it doesn't hold for Shinovar. But I reckon there will be elements of truth to your idea.
  2. That cookie was pure, filtered, condensed stormlight. Yum.
  3. I disagree, see the quote I posted earlier. Shallan's reaction is probably the biggest tell we have about Jasnah's emotional state, in response to both these events and their motivation.
  4. Yeah, I know what your mean. Except the bit about sloths, they creep me out. But I did like the sloths in Zootopia! As far as allomancers and surgebinders go, it's a good combo. Allomancy is rules-heavy magic, surgebinding is your fantasy-action movie. It covers everything you'd want, everything I want, out of life.
  5. I think there is significant indication of being a victim of some sort. At least one bit after the "philosophy lesson" suggest this. Of course, one doesn't need to be a victim themselves to be broken by it - witnessing horrors can be enough by itself. We may never get to find out, there's only so much a reader can stomach, and like Vin, you don't always need a complete picture to see the truth in it.
  6. Hey now, don't discourage it! I love cookies.
  7. Well, I'll mention it here because I've been harboring this pet theory for a little while. Spren are reincarnations of people. There's really only one piece of evidence for this theory, and it's quite petty, but yours is a second piece. If you're interested, I'll dig up the quote that made me think of this idea.
  8. It might not work like you think it does. In the first book, the first time Vin uses steelpushing to elevate herself above the street, she pushes either all her strength and comes to rest at a particular height, at some kind of equilibrium height, where Kelsier is also waiting. It doesn't make sense as a force or an acceleration, because in either case she would rocket above the resting position. This alone suggests that there is more than the obvious going on here. Not forgetting that the use of powers is so heavily tied to intent, which you can't quantify.
  9. Last one: there's a lot of this one. When quoting dialogue, the second pair of quotation marks is often the wrong way around. May be an artefact of the ebook, but it is there. Look at the spanreed conversation between Jasnah and Dalinar, eg location 8342. " 'I must go now,' " Jasnah said via Danlan. and " 'I should like promise a date when I will come.' " Dalinar could... The last " in each line is oriented incorrectly in the Tor-downloaded ebook. Subtle, but it's there, and I don't think it's isolated to this conversation. Perhaps search all instances. Or maybe this is not a problem. I'll finally mention that there was a bad line-break that I wasn't able to relocate. It was in the first half of the book, I think, when I didn't think to mark it. It looked like it probably happened where there was a page break in the document as it was being edited, so it didn't get spotted - because it looked fine like that. iirc, it was smack-bang in the middle of a line of text. A grammar checker would probably locate it. Again, may be an artefact of the ebook only.
  10. Another one that might be technically ok, but struck me as weird: Rock gets dialogue in the same line that Moash already spoke: ebook location 19411 Rock shook his head. "Is of the holehental... Perhaps just a forgotten line break?
  11. Spotted in the latest Tor-downloaded ebook (when it was free): Location 16334 "Every bridge run," Kaladin said. "You're going to make us go on everyone." Should be every one, no?
  12. Probably wrong, so here goes: ROCK IS HOID. Proof? Prepare for a you-had-me-at-hello moment: Neither can hurt other people! It's open and shut, bake 'em away, toys. Lowsick airlanders.
  13. r u srs O_o Rysn is the name of the chapter, and in it there are Shin traders...
  14. Rysn, from the second set of interludes.
  15. Hmm, that didn't seem to get anyone fired up, so let me add some theory crafting. Shallan can read minds. Those cremlings were actually a Dysian Aimian or whatever Arclo is, and just by being in their presence, she can piece together memories of where that Aimian has been. And that same Aimian happened to witness his events in those interludes. What do you think? How else could she have known about these events?
  16. Has there been discussion about this? The chapter of Jasnah's philosophy lesson, just after the bathing pool bit: "The scrapings of cremlings climbing out of cracks had become the footsteps of mysterious people from far-off lands. Large-eyed traders from Shinovar, a greatshell rider from Kadrix, or a narrowboat sailor from the Purelake."
  17. The tin/pewter opposition makes sense. There is a physical-cognitive axis that you are pushing and pulling yourself along. Pewter pulls you more into the physical realm, tin pulls you more into the cognitive realm. You are an entity that exists in all three realms at once, and so your energy/investiture is spread across those realms too. When you pull your existence more into the physical realm, you become more powerful/energetic there, which translates into increased strength. Equally, presence in the cognitive realm gives you increased awareness of everything around you. This can even go so far that you can "see" when your vision is completely obscured, like old Lestibournes.
  18. Oh, duh, the increased speed would be a multiple lashing... [edit] Yeah, so while it is looking like this works, and there is some evidence for the idea... It poses a bigger question : If this theory holds water, why can Dalinar use these abilities? He'd be a Bondsmith, not a Windrunner. Also, a shardblade doesn't grant surges, but plate does? Is this some new info on how plates work? Or is this just part of the Bondsmith's "unique abilities". [edit 2] oh, I think it's in the name - bondsmith, ie someone good at bonding. They can make bonds, even with dead plate. In fact, this is really compelling. I'm gonna watch closely for evidence that he uses surges from his blade too.
  19. There's also something else that just occurred to me. Dalinar tells Adolin that he and Sadeas made a vow to protect Elhokar. If anything would make a windrunner's plate work better, or should be a vow to protect. You're right about the fast speed, that's about friction, not adhesion. It's not a complete picture yet, but I like the jigsaw pieces so far.
  20. Even if my idea proves false, we can assume there are some features all plate have in common. Picking and choosing evidence that fits the theory is not enough, so thanks for objecting. But here, again, fast speed is a possible side effect of adhesion (just like Lift, zipping around and ignoring friction), and the immense strength is clearly driven here by the need to protect Elhokar, and look at the ideals of the windrunners. It looks like you were trying to oppose my idea, but if anything you've just presented more evidence for it.
  21. I'm re-reading TWoK - my first was an audible listen, amazed how much I missed. Anyhoo, I'm about a third of the way through and there are a couple of passing remarks about Dalinar's shardplate that seem interesting. "As the sky spun, something seemed to right, as if the plate itself knew which way was up" "[Dalinar's shardplate sabatons] encased his boots entirely and had a rough surface on the bottoms that seemed to cling to the rock." The first is a feature of gravitation, the second is a feature of adhesion. The way I see it : - these remarks are insignificant or - Dalinar's shardplate is a former windrunner or - all shardplates are of windrunners, and are therefore possibly made from honorspren. I searched the WoBs but found nobody who's asked about this. Thoughts?
  22. Heralds could easily be an exception - they sorta don't die, after all. I don't know if my idea is a good one, I was more curious about if it had been ruled out.
  23. Hoid could have provided a shardblade, maybe it wasn't even bonded. Or perhaps it was one he had bonded before his return to damnation. This subterfuge could be something of a hoax, God knows that Brandon was more than forthcoming that something was amiss here. I just don't know if anyone else has considered this possibility.
  24. Hi all, I'm new here. I enjoy the books and want to talk more about them. The cosmere is a beautiful thing and I'm excited to be here while it is being built around us, for us. You may have also seen me on reddit with the same name. I look forward to doing business with you.
  25. I'm not sure if this has been asked of Brandon yet, but could Taln have swapped them? He could have had bonded both an honorblade and a shardblade, and if asked to give up his sword maybe he gave up the shardblade and not let on that he still has another - his honorblade.
