Paladin Brewer he/him Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 A few questions I have on the Heralds: 1) Do we know yet why they get tortured when they "go back?" 2) The 9 who did not go back, where did they go? Did they just roam Roshar as immortals the whole time? 3) I assume the Heralds to be generally "good" but I am confused by the one who was going around killing the potential Radiants. Not a question as much as an observation.

Kalak's prologue and Taln's words and thoughts are quite explicit in this. 48 minutes ago, Paladin Brewer said: 2) The 9 who did not go back, where did they go? They are Immortal as they are not Humans but quite ghosts (technically speaking they are Cognitive Shadows) 49 minutes ago, Paladin Brewer said: 3) I assume the Heralds to be generally "good" but I am confused by the one who was going around killing the potential Radiants. Not a question as much as an observation. First of all you have to know that all' the Heralds are insane now (we don't know if there is a magical reason or a mundane One) and the One who refer to has in his own mind a good reason to kill. You saw other Heralds performe weird things.
cloudjumper he/him Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 Assuming you've read all of the Stormlight Books, 1. I think it's part of the Oathpact 2. Yes, they just roamed Roshar. 3. The Heralds as we see them now are all greatly altered from their previous state when we see them in the prologue to WoK. The Heralds now see the world a little differently, and while some might still cling to the same goal they once started out with, like Nale, they go about them different ways. Nale wants to stop the Voidbringers from returning by destroying the proto-radiants, an effort that ultimately does not work. The Heralds aren't really "good", but they're "broken", as Kalak put it in the prologue. Breaking and reforging plays a big role in Stormlight, and you could consider the Heralds similar to proto-radiants before speaking oaths or Radiants after abandoning their oaths.
Andy92 Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 Have you read the Edgedancer novella? Will give you some more insight on #3.

We know they do get tortured, and I think most of us just figure it's either because torture kind of seems like Odium's thing (i.e., pointless cruelty), or so that he can get them to give up and get the next Desolation started (i.e., meaningful cruelty). Or both. But I don't think we have explicit knowledge of the reason.
Yata he/him Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 Seems that only an Herald could start a Desolation, breaking under torture. Probably the simple act of be in Roshar is enough to trigger the Desolation ad they have to Soon return or a new Desolation Will start

I don't understand, the cognitive Shadows are not "of something else". There is a WoB on the Cosmere's Immortality and there Brandon said the Heralds are Cognitive Shadows. I will avoid to post It here as there are spoiler from others books
