In the new excerpt, Chapter 12, we see Kaladin withdraw stormlight into himself, which makes me think, if he could do this whilst battling Szeth I can see a scenario where every time Szeth tries to use a full lashing (or another) we see Kaladin not only nullifying it or drawing it into him, making for an interesting point in the battle.

Two foreseeable issues are though are:

1. Can Kaladin only withdraw his own stormlight and not all stormlight infused in the rock as part of a lashing

2. Kaladin currently seems to be inhibited by touch, is he going to get better at it or will we see some crazy point where he gets infused/ is touching whatever is infused at a critical point and can as a result catch Szeth unawares

Like most other forms of investiture we have seen, such as breathes and feruchemy, I would imagine once someone places their "signature" on it, only that person can recover it. I doubt he can absorb Szeth's lashings but he could absorb all the available stormlight around. He can hold stormlight longer than Szeth so he would just have to outlast Szeth's absorbed stormlight to win.

I'm particularly interested, though, if Szeth's lashings can affect Kaladin.  We already know that his own full lashings do not, during the sparing sequence in ch12, although I'm not sure if that's because they are his or because him having invested Stormlight nullifies it in some way.

Brandon says it is much harder to affect objects that are already invested - hence why Szeth's lashings don't work on Shardplate. Darkness calls absorbing stormlight 'investing'...so no, Szeths lashings should not affect Kaladin if Kaladin is holding stormlight.

Ergo, Kaladin and Szeth will end up in a breath holding competition, the first one to (stop) g(l)o(wing) purple dies. Sure they'll do it while engaging in a mind bending acrobatic battle for all time. But ultimately, it'll be a breath holding competition.

I had a similar thought about Szeth, Kaladin and Stormlight after reading chapter 12.  As a corollary to what you said, can Kaladin absorb the Stormlight that Szeth is simply leaking out into the wild? Szeth admits he cannot hold onto it for very long and it just radiates out of him.  Would that still have an 'investiture signature' as awesomeness summoned mentioned above?

And if it doesn't gain a signature, or if the signature doesn't happen until it is used, could Kaladin suck the Stormlight directly out of Szeth since Szeth can't hold it that well?

I think that this is where intent comes in.  I don't think that Kaladin's lashings would affect him if they were not intended to.

I would assume (based on the wealth of information regarding our surgebinding duel) that the actual lashing would be like feruchemy in that you cannot re-absorb someone else's 'pool' or use of stormlight. I would like to see Kal sucking in the leakage from Szeth though, or even better discovering the 3rd Ideal, and just plain ripping out of him leaving Szeth a deflated and suddenly exhausted wreck.

I wonder if that's another diff between Honorblade and Navel surgebinding?

Also, what about Larkins?

I just had this weird image of someone shooting stormlight out of their bellybutton. Navel surgebinding! Lol
