Hi there guys!

This is Thorontir, a Brandon's fan from Spain. I don't know if you have much members from Europe, but, well, here i am ;)

I have read Elantris, Warbreaker, and the Mistborn Trilogy, and looking for some info on the Stormlight Archive and the new Mistborn book i came to this forum. An then... Wow! I have never heard of the Cosmere before, but when readed about it, most of it make sense. If before i loved the way Brandon wrote, now i see him as a genius. Cosmere seems to me like a Silmarillion, and may be even greater.

About me, i do not have enough time for reading as much as i like to, but this makes me search for good books instead of trying anithing that comes into my hands. This is the way that Sanderson, Rothfuss, R.S. Bakker or Steven Eriksson have come to me: having good friends that also like to read is a good help.

Well, i think that, at this point, i should say something obvious: I read well enough in english -Most of the books that i have read in the last years have been in english, and being electronis engineer all the thins i read in my work are also in english- but writing (and talking) is completely different, so please, forgive my mistakes, since are not intended.

Anyway, with the amount of info and blogs/posts/etc here i think that will be some time while i read all of this befores writing anything, so don't worry yet ;)

Well, as a introduction i think is not the best, but well, maybe i can write something more on the profile.

See you guys!

EDIT: Mmm, i think this is a little poor. I will add something more. As other books i love, i have read almost all the books that Michael Moorcock wrote about the multiverse (Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon, Erekose, ...), and some that are not related to that (As "Behold the man"). Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Dan Simmons, Terry Pratchett, Andrej Sapkovski, and George R.R. Martin are another authors that i like. As i said now i have little time to read, but when i was youg, i was capable of bein reading all day when i have no school. I remember reading "The Neverending Story" in a weekeng when i was ten, or "Lord of the Rings" in less than a week.

Out of literature, i am nearly 27 years old, and as i said before i am electronics engineer. I work designing embedded systems (If there are more electronics here they will understand ;) ). I like playing squash and basketball, and playing videogames (well, i have an xbox360 that i have not used in months, but bought "rock band" and played a lot with friends... :) ). About music i used to hear mainly "power metal" but later i expanded my horizons :P I still hear Blind Guardian, or Rhapsody, but now i listen too to Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Helloween, AC/DC, and so on.

Well, i think now is a little more complete as a description.

See you guys (again :D)

Bienvenidos, Thorontir! And I apologize for the lack of proper punctuation; I have no idea how to make that symbol on a computer. And don't worry; your English is definitely better than my Spanish. ;)

Anyways, I'm KChan, one of the admins here, I'm so glad you're enjoying the site so far! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. :D It's nice to meet you!

I was wondering if we might pick up any Europeans while Brandon's out there. Okay, no I wasn't, but it's awesome anyway.

Hi, I'm Silus, I post most places, though I tend to hang out in the RP section, where I run a game.

Has The Way of Kings come out where you are yet?

Helllloo there Thorontir, great to see another foreign member with better English than me, a native Brit >.>.

Asimov, Clarke and Simmons hey? you choose wisely :D and another Engineer XD I myself am employed at a little electronic systems workshop. Alas, I only do the programming, since I'm a computer science student.

Good luck around the site, and watch out for the admins; they like to spike people >.>

For the Way of Kings I think it has not been released, so once again i should get it via Amazon. Oh, i did not mention before, but in addition to the regular books, i owe an eBook too. Do you know any good ebook stores that are not Amazon? I prefer to buy ePub ones...

By the way, i do not buy only in Amazon. If someone does not know bookdepository, should take a look. Free delivery.

And finally, I played RP games back in high school (Well, in fact I was almost always master, but enjoyed making stories for my friends), mainly MERP and Stormbringer (We played the old 4th edition, as it was the first released in Spain, and in that time we very little understanding of English, and limited internet access). I will take a look at the game you run (and the others, if i had time enough), I still enjoy reading good games, and internet ones are better for acting of the characters (People feels less shy? shameful? i don't know what is the exact word, but i think you will understand me) than playing in a table. In fact, when i entered college i started to help ruling a spanish roleplaying website which had good acceptance. I keep very good memories for the games played there...

I know book depository! I got my copy of I Don't Want To Kill You from them because I didn't want to wait for it to come out in the states, so I cheated. I still use the bookmark they sent me. :)

Comparing a table run RP to a Forum one is difficult, I wouldn't say apples and oranges, but close. I find both very enjoyable, but the pacing and atmosphere is very different.

Hey Thorontir! I think you may be our first member from Spain, though we do have Joe from the UK, so you aren't the first European :P

You write pretty well, honestly. Sure, there are some small things but I was never confused by what you meant, and communication is the whole point of language, right?

I would note that if/when you post in General Theories, though, it's easy to be misunderstood. I'm reminded of this Twinborn thread, which still hurts my brain to think about. So, if you happen to be misunderstood, don't worry! It happens to all of us.

Interesting that Way of Kings hasn't come out there yet, but not terribly surprising, considering its huge size.

There are a number of good ebook stores. Google has its Google Books, Barnes and Noble has the Nook store, and apparently Apple has iBooks, but I tend to avoid iTunes like the plague, so I wouldn't know about that last one. The Nook store is definitely EPUB, and I believe Google Books is as well. Both Google and the Nook have Way of Kings. Are you able to buy the English ebooks, or are they region locked?

I'm really glad you could join us, and I look forward to seeing what you have to say! If you have any deep, theoretical cosmere questions, feel free to ask me in Instant Messenger, or Private Messages, or really whenever. The learning curve is pretty steep, and it's sometimes easy to get confused. But don't worry, if you ask me things, it's never a bother. I like blabbing about cosmere far too much than is medically advised. But then, we are on a fansite, so that's not surprising :P

Well, about Cosmere theories, i have more to read than to say, i think ;) In fact, since i have some friends that do not read in english, i think i'll spend some time translating to them the "basics" of Cosmere at least. But be sure i will say something when i read Way of Kings, since i have seen that is the book where Brandon says more things about this particular issue. Till i read on the internet about Cosmere, as i said in the first message, i did not have though about anything this huge... As i said before, i see this like a Brandon's Silmarillion, and i loved that so much... Can't wait to know more things about it.

And about being confused about theories... well, i have survived to the Malaz books (I have read till the fifth at the moment, and the first from Eslemont, and have 2 more waiting) and to the first trilogy of "Prince of Nothing" from Richard Scott Bakker... I am more or less acostumed to get a bit confused :P That is something i loved from Sanderson: he tells a great history, but his words are easy to understand. I fell very similar with "The Wise Man's Fear" from Rothfuss: a great history that did not made me lost into dictionaries in order to read it. Bakker, on the other hand, makes me stop every few pages...

Welcome! I'm very glad that another European has joined 17th shard! I'm Zas678, and I am the compiler of the Brandonothology, a massive account of the behind the scene questions that Brandon has answered. Most of our insights come from those answers, or the interpretations of those answers. You should look at it! And if you want a basic outline of the Cosmere, you should look at Cosmere 101 in the General Theories forum. It's pretty basic, and I don't think it has any major spoilers for WoK. I'll double check.

Thorontir, I think you'll like it here. Especially since you're an engineer, and so you like seeing how things work out in a very technical way.

You know, I find that Misborn 3 gives the biggest insight into the Cosmere so far. Especially with Sazed's epigraphs (the little header things).

Thorondir, I've got a question- where does your name and image come from? Is it a specific reference to a fantasy character, or just an old RPG character?

Posted

Well, i will take a look at the Cosmere 101, but for "Brandonothology" is probably better if i wait until i read WoK, isn't it?

About the name and avatar... The avatar is from "amoka" (or something close, i did not remember well), a russian designer whose illustrations i discovered when looking for "A Song of Ice and Fire" illustrations. he made many portraits, even from old targaryan kings and bastards. This one is not from that world, but i liked it a lot, and took if for some forums.

For the name, it is the one i chosed for my first internet RPG game, a huge MERP campaign. He was a gondorian ranger who came from Ithilien to the distand real of Arnor (well, to the remains of it). In fact it was not his name, but a nickname earned long time ago. The reason was his long view, so good that his fellow rangers named him "Watching Eagle". Sounds better in sindarin :P The game i talk about lasted like 3 or 4 years, and from that moment i usad this nickname or Tharaennon, who was the name of his brother and also of his son. Maybe if i got time i could translate some of the story in the offtopic section. As i said was long enough, and played with many characters (like 30 or so). And the master was the better i have ever known. But he got married, got a daughter, and the game ended :'( Fortunately being him a good friend, he told me out of the game how it was supposed to end. Very epic. Shame we couldn't play it. But one thing that is good in those games is that you can enjoy the action of writing. I mean, maybe the game won't ends properly, but the time you spent writing (and reading) is worth a lot. That is another thing that i miss from the times when i was younger: at the college i had little time (Becoming an engineer does not come easy ;) ) but every little i spent writing was a good one. Nowadays i read little, and write almost nothing.

Well, better i stop complaining, i do not want to be known as the "self-pitying noob" :P

I was thinking now... Has been released any "official" roleplaying game based on any Brandon's job? I think i read once about a Mistborn RPG coming to market, but know nothing of it.

Posted

The only "official" roleplay as of yet is Mistborn: The Inquisition, which is 17th Shard's official RP. You can find a link for it in the navbar, if you're interested. And wow, 30 characters! I don't have that many on MBI yet, but I have that many on a couple other sites I used to run. Character addicts unite! :D

You're correct, CraftyGames was supposed to release one. I think Isaac (the artist for Mistborn's symbols and maps) did some symbol work for them, but I haven't heard anything about it in forever.

I think Inkthinker is still working on the illustrations and from I've heard from him it's coming out late this year or early yet.

EDIT- Never mind. There is no date on it yet.

http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=6683.msg177238#msg177238

Aside from Isaac Stewart, who's contributing work on the maps and symbols, I'm the only artist on the Mistborn RPG. Cover and interiors, this part of the book is mine to carry. They made a blog post about it some time ago, but I hadn't really said much about it myself because I'm still in the middle of the work.

Edit Edit- For those of you not familiar with Inkthinker's work, he did the Shallan pages in WoK and also a major bulk of the images in our gallery (at the bottom of the forum).

Edit Edit Edit- (isn't this fun?) Thorodir, there are pieces of the Brandonothology that are spoilerific, but most of it is pre-WoK. I'm going to reorganize it soon, so it groups it into categories rather than in a gigantic book.

Hi Thorontir! It's great to see another member joining the forum (especially because this makes me feel less new, haha.) Your name and the origin of your name are great. Yes, I definitely recommend reading Way of Kings too. It's a great book and after you finish you can come and discuss the Cosmere more with us... that is always fun. If you are bored, you can always send me a Personal Message (in English or Spanish; my Spanish is equal to your English). Oh, also, I've been searching for copies of Mistborn in Spanish unsuccessfully, even though I know they exist somewhere. If you know where to buy some I would be happy to know. :)

Again, welcome to the forum!

For spanish books i recommend you "Casa del Libro"

Maybe the price scares you ;) [This was one of the reasons for which i started reading in english: prices have nothing to do... ] here you have links to the three books of Mistborn:

El imperio final

El pozo de la ascensión

El héroe de las eras

In this same web you can find Warbreaker in spanish too.

Ah, i got a copy of Way of Kings. I will tell you when find time to read it.

And Chachel, i will be very pleased to talk with you. Maybe i can practice my english while you practice your spanish, if you are interested. Ah, and if you want the Mistborn books in ebook format instead if paper tell me via PM.

And this is for all of you guys. Maybe you have been around for a while, but for someone (as me) newly arrived, the amount of info what you have here is *very* HUGE. Very.

See you!

Maybe we should get a language practice thread going on, where we can all speak in our second languages together. Is that something you guys might be interested in?

Posted

Thank you for the recommendations! Maybe I will get MB 2 (El pozo de la asención) because only that book is in stock on both websites.

Is what i do with every post :P

The guy that rules Cyberdark is a nice one. And uses to have very good books. Despite what can seem, is much smaller than Casa del Libro, but he tries to gain his customers being kind and looking for things that may be of your like. As an example, i bought him some Robert Howard's books (All of them about Conan) and then, when he got books about Cormac (also from R.E.Howard) called to tell me. I know that this is for his own benefit, but most places didn't do nothing like this.

Eh, it's not really what I'm here for. But if a lot of other people are behind it, I say, sure, why not?
