Steeldancer he/him Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 (edited) I don't know how much this has been discussed but based on this WOB http://theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=1178 I'm thinking that the asterisk he mentions is that originally I think as part of the oathpact that the Heralds were able to draw power directly from Honor, Spoiler Like in mistborn with vin fueling elend but now with Honor dead they require you to breathe in stormlight, which requires more stormlight than a normal live spren bond. This also brings to mind, if the oathpact was not created specifically to catch odium, why did it give the heralds offensive abilities? Why BLADES of all things? Why not, idk, a metal stick of honor power? Edited January 27, 2017 by The Flash Grammar and spoiler rules

Why not, idk, a metal stick of honor power? I think there's a paraphrased WoB floating around somewhere that does say that the Heralds used to be able to draw power without needing to breath in stormlight. Could be wrong though and have just read too many theories instead. My theory is that while the Oathpact was not created with combating Odium and his forces in mind, there was still a need for leaders and fighters. My theory is that the Oathpact gave the Heralds power so that they could lead and protect the Rosharans in their new world, so offensive power was needed. Also, blades are fairly unambiguous as weapons, unlike metal sticks.

Honorblades were blades only. Sprenblades are blades by default because they tried to initate Honorblades, but they are more flexible and can become other things.

manukos he/him Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 it is probably for the same reason that every shardblade left is a sword, i suspect that it is because, at the time swords were more commonplace and not resticted for a specific rank , and since most people were proficient with swords, the wepon the chose was just that (also compared wit a spear or a hammer it has much more "cutting power" as well as diverse usage ) also i suspect that the sword , just like light eyes became a symbol of high birth due to the connection to the KR during the higherocraty or smt , and hence got restricted to them . as for the "why give them offensive abilities" , that is probably so that they could lead a defeance against the voidbringers
