Long quotes

Why do people quote the h entire post before them? Isn't it obvious that that's the post they are referring to?

Sometimes people reply to the post as you are typing and that creates confusion. I'm sure most people could figure it out, but another benefit is that the website gives the quoted person a notification so a dialogue can happen (sometimes things get lost in the recent news feed and one doesn't know a person replied to their comment).
