Magic systems overlapping.

Question

Posted

Maybe minor spoilers for the cosmere

Hey guys, I've been lurking for years but never really posted much. I'm sorry if this had been answered before but I was curious. I think Hoid has different magic types and can world hop, thus bringing the different magics to different worlds? What I was wondering though is, if let's say, Kaladin could World hop and gain enough breaths and training to become a powerful awakener, and maybe gain some magics from other worlds, could he then take these new powers back and just be that much more powerful than he was before?

if this is possible, does this mean everyone in the cosmere has a breath and they just don't know how that magic system works outside of the warbreaker series world? (Sorry can't think of the World name at the moment) kelsier has a breath, kaladin, shallan, etc?

I know I just said I thought hoid did that, but I wasn't sure if I was even right, or if he was special. I hope my question makes sense.

WoB on the Breaths question:

Quote

After several more signings, I asked my other question. "Do people in the Comsere, besides Nalthis, have Breaths?"
BRANDON SANDERSON
"No." He then signed a person's books, then said "To elaborate a little more, that's not to say they don't have a life force, because they do. But if someone not from Nalthis were to suddenly gain the ability to become an Awakener, they could not use what they have to Awaken something. That's not to say that they can't receive breaths though."

I'm not completely sure about this, but I'm pretty sure that people who gain Breaths at Nathlis (the Warbreaker world) at the very least are able to retain their Breaths. Remember how Hoid had perfect pitch in Words of Radiance? I'm pretty sure that's because he has Breaths (enough Breaths give you this talent). Presumably, that means you may be right: people from other worlds are able to gain Breaths and take them to other planets. Presumably they already have the allocated one-Breath-per-person, but I'm not sure.
I'm not sure if you could actually awaken anything off of Nathlis, though.

Usually (with some specific exceptions) the magic systems works everywhere, some are easier to export off world, other are harder. But it's more tied to the Magic's need than a Specific block.

For Istance, as you said someone may gain Breath and use them everywhere in the cosmere...OF course in places different from Nalthis He would have hard time to find more Breath (except from some interworld seller or something like that).

A Surgebinder (like Kal) would be a Surgebinder almost everywhere in the Cosmere (Honestly I am unsure of this, but just because Splinters like Spren has problem to leave the homeland) and in theory he may use his powers on other Shardworld...If he manage to have fuel, He probably may use other kind of Investiture, but some planets are very poor of avaliable Investiture (thinks for example to Scadrial).

I cited Scadrial, well Scadrial's Magic is the hardest to gain (it's tied to genetics) but the easier to export in other worlds.

For now the real "impossible to export" Magic Systems are the Selish One, the location is really a critical part of how they work and simply you can't use them off-world

My understanding from the WoB already posted and other information is that anyone can Awaken if they acquire Breaths, but that non-Nalthians don't have an innate Breath that could be used (he says "They could not use what they have to Awaken something."
