Definitely a fist pump moment.

You are fixing to get into some good stuff.

Harrison rafo

not surprising on that big of time coverage. I suspect we are going to get way beyond that to get to Gababa conflict.

The rate your tearing through this I know you ll pass me up before I finish 10 so I ll probably get to a point where I’m absent in thread till I finish. Been quite awhile since I finished that 1-9 power read so my excitement is coming back so maybe I ll be much faster then I anticipate.

I’m kinda hoping he includes a summary of 1-9 in 10 but doubtful he does. Such a large world/cast I’ve forgotten a lot of the players so I ll probably try and find a summary to read before I start and hope I don’t see any 10 spoilers in it. Ugh that will piss me off.

So far my library doesn't have the downloadable audiobook of Through Fiery Trials and I am number 12 in line for the print book so you will probably still be able to read it before me unless they receive the audio copy. It's been my experience that there is a lot of repeating in the Weber books and I'm sure your memory will be refreshed as you read it. Hope you enjoy the latest book. It's release day!

Edit:

Just listened to the audio book sample and there is, surprising, a handy timeline of events that summarizes a lot of stuff.

Starting now!

holy crap this is a through and even more detailed summary of events then was in 1-9 regularly imo. Maybe because it’s been over a year since I finished though but dang it’s cool to read this.

no worries I ll tag anything I post once I actually get to starting. This thing has been pretty long though.

Huh there was already a pretty dumb mistake on the 1st pg I don’t see how made it’s way past editing. I will tag it even though it’s not a story spoiler but a time issue from bk 9 to 10.

i thought it looked off so I went and checked past books and sure enough bk 10 is wrong. It’s saying it’s 890 and describes stuff that was covered towards the end in 7-9 which was from 896-97. Now how the hell did that get past edit? Hpmf

Are you reading the hard cover or kindle? I ask because I read a review that said there were quite a few mistakes on the ecopy and was wondering if it was the same with the printed one.

Have hit the 100 pg mark and my hopes of him having gotten an editor are crushed. Ugh I envy your 1.6 speed... so much bloat/sitting around tables from all over the various spots just talking. Maybe 15% action so far and it’s only been table setting for this stage of the story. So far veryyyy boring to me. Really going to have to pick up or I ll get very bogged down on my progress.

That said it’s been very nice to get back to the main group with the

5 year time jump from bk9 ending and having new information touched on in glossed over bits.

I feel like in Midst Toil and Tribulation they have spent most of the book talking about how to make their new iron clad riverboats work haha. Do you think there is more bloat than normal or have you forgotten what your getting into with a Weber novel?

Bk 6 is when the stuff really began to bother me yeah especially with Delthak chapters.

id say it’s a little more then normal bks 6-9 though so far. Practically 130 pgs of 2 to 10+ standing or sitting talking about events around the world. It’s a bit much.

i want my popcorn already

The way I feel about David Weber is similar to how I feel about Robert Jordan. I think his editor needed to have a difficult conversation with him and say something like, "Listen, you're are a immense talent with many wonderful ideas but you are out of control right now. You spend countless pages on unnecessary details and plots that go nowhere. I am taking out 2/3 of your book that you submitted. Trust me it's for the best."

Should finish Midst Toil and Tribulation tomorrow and then its onwards to Like a Mighty Army. Prince Nahrmahn is back! It's a little wierd and also a little cheap that a mainish character died but gets brought back but hey....I'm rolling with it and happy that the good guys have there best strategist back!

Also really weird story about the audiobooks I found out. The new narrator is getting a lot of complaints about his performance. I looked it up and their best narrator Oliver Wyman  (there are several) got fired by Weber and told he would never narrate his books again. Evidently he changed a key word in a sentence in book 9 (a prank gone wrong?) The author was very upset and him and Tor was on the phone immediately after he found out to get it fixed.

Norman went out like a boss but you could see his “return” coming from a mile away since Merlin

put the thing on his head.

The surprising thing was the actual way he came back. I was expecting a

PICA Norman rather then just virtual Norman

Im definitely slowing down on my progress though due to this bloat. 168 pgs in and this has been the sloggiest opening since I began to have problems back on book 6. This one has some legit smh emo garbage over the past 30 pgs.

I’ve also been looking at the rating each day on Amazon and it’s been steady at 3 stars vs the usual 4 of the other books. I’m thinking this is going to take me quite awhile to chip away at this 800+ pg brick. NOTHING is happening really.

200 pgs in. Yawnnnnnnn!!! This is without a doubt the worst of the lot at my current place vs the others. Weber’s need to say every rusting characters FULL name is driving me insane. I don’t care or need all that info on a 1-2 pg character! My goodness man! How meek his editor is...

ed: jeez nor do I need a characters full name within the same dang segment!! I KNOW WHO IT IS IM READING IN THAT BIT!! Just got it twice within like 3 paragraphs of each other!

i find myself fundamentally opposed(spoiler here so click at your own risk...) at this stage of

Merlins plan to have Safehold’s other countries building tech. In the beginning this would have been more in line with his goal to ready humanity to fight the Gbaba but at this point he is way to invested with Charis and it’s people well being but here in bk 10 his master plan is to give, yes give the Chinese and Russian equivalent factories to pursue their own tech boom. This is stupid considering how entwined he is with our main group. Better to bring everyone to heel 1st imo. I sure as hell wouldn’t “plan” to give my enemy their own factory.

Isn't Merlin's reasoning to have technology so widespread so that if/when the angels return the genie can't be put back into the bottle? They have been mentioning that the angels can return anytime now back in book 5. You are further along, of course, are they still worried about that? I agree it sounds dumb, but if they are worried about that possible threat,  as they were when it was first introduced, I can see the logic behind it. You dont want these powerful angels to focus all their attention on Charis, wipe that nation of the face of the earth, and have the entire war be for nothing.

What would make the most sense is for Merlin to work on disabling the bombardment platform, but from what I understand thats not a priority. I personally would want to disable the giant guillotine hanging over my head, but that's just me.

It’s supposed to be for the genie reason yeah but he’s way to close to his side this far along now.

RAFO and RAFO. It was really fun to speculate that the Arch’s HAD to still pose a threat before the info hit story.

Also not 10 minutes after my ed last night some interesting stuff happened finally!

Omg. Just when things were actually happening boom(I mean I knew it was coming eventually) there was a Delthak break. I couldn’t even get through it last night. I only just now finished it and I have been chipping away at it all day I swear. Lol and all 11 pages made me want to cry.

Haha! It just wouldn't be a real Safehold novel without a Delthak chapter! I should finish Like a Mighty Army either Thurday or Friday. I, personally, like it better than the previous book. Yes, there is a lot of war planning and tactics discussion, but I would rather have that than the dithering that took place in the previous book. My favorite part so far is when Merlin found out about the massacre, that took place over the canal explosion, he took on a new Seijin personality and got sweet sweet revenge and wrote that nasty letter to the high inquisiter.

I refuse to read any other Weber. I can’t put myself through it no matter how fun I hear other series are as well. Safehold is very fun when it’s going. I haven’t even broke pg 300 yet. That Delthak was followed up by more random jibber jabber for pages only to land right back on another Delthak. UGHHHHHHH! Though I do have my speculation glasses on on something I’ve suspected since early in the series. If there something is mentioned again then I will have been wrong all this time but I don’t think I am.

im not reading the reviews but it’s still holding at 3 stars with 85 so far. This doesn’t make me feel super confident im going to get my popcorn this time. This is the worst “start” of any of the 10 out for me

Finished Like a Mighty Army and decided to take a break with a different audiobook. Funnily enough despite the many flaws of this series, in my heart, I yearn to return to it. It ended with a bit of a cliffhanger. The Delthak chapters in this one weren't too painful. A brief battle scene and it becomes a tug boat during a huge storm a sea.

It felt satisfying to have Nimue 2.0. I liked that he didn't give her the new memories and she didn't have to carry the burden of the tough decisions Merlin made.

I don't know how much you've been following this (or even care), but every book title is taken from a hymn. The last several are taken from the following:

How Firm a Foundation

1. How firm a foundation, ye Saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in his excellent word! What more can he say than to you he hath said, Who unto the Savior, who unto the Savior, Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled?

5. When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply. The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume, thy dross to consume, Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.

Onward Christian Soldiers

1 Onward, Christian soldiers! Marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus Going on before. Christ, the royal Master, Leads against the foe; Forward into battle, See his banners go! (Chorus) Onward, Christian soldiers! Marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus Going on before.

2. At the sign of triumph Satan's host doth flee; On, then, Christian soldiers, On to victory. Hell's foundations quiver At the shout of praise; Brothers, lift your voices, Loud your anthems raise.

I'm so weak and opted for the middle ground. The other Audiobook is 12 Rules for Life so I am listening to one rule a day and using the remaining time to listen to Hell's Foundations Quiver. Also dowloaded the first Honor Harrington book Off Basilesk Station because it was free for kindle. Will I ever read it? Maybe not. But the fact that I am even considering it is a sign that I should probably seek professional help

Got someone on Malazan that I very much trust. We read 1-9 together. He didn’t have much positive to say of his recent completion of 10. Bummer. I’m only on 389 and it’s just a grind. Rating remaining at 3 with 123 reviews making it the lowest of the series so far.

Just saw your last post @Briar King Just finished Hell's Foundations Quiver. Loved the ending! Merlin and Nimue go in with augmented shotguns basically yelling, "Say Hello to my little friend!" They then blow up a wooden ship with their spaceship! Then Merlin casually going into Thirsts office and telling him, "We need to talk".

If it gives you any hope B.K I do know something big happens in the last chapter of Through Fiery Trials. I have no idea what, but that's the word on the street. Anyways just found out my library is getting book 10 in audiobook and I am 5 on the list of one copy.

Also Crossroads of Twilight=Through Fiery Trials? Yes...David Weber is the Robert Jordan of Science Fiction.

It was the only ray of sunshine my friend said 10 contained. He thankfully didn’t say what. I just want to hurry up and get there at this point. I’m reduced to skimming pages today. This is pretty boring and I got pissed off at some stuff last night. I will explain when your there. I’m only on 474... ugh

rating still remains on 3 stars 135 reviews/ratings.

CoT could well be an apt comparison

oh and yeah bk 8 has a hell of and the only cliffhanger of an end right?! Was awesome.
