But I think in many ways this is because more than anything Lirin identified as a surgeon and Tien couldn't follow this path while Kaladin could have been great. Remember Lirin's life philosophy is pretty much built around saving people and Tien couldn't do that. As a parent myself, the idea of a father solely encouraging potential career into one of his children on the basis this child might succeed in his preferred field is simple unacceptable. The fact Lirin was willing to steal and lie to secure what is presented to us as the nirvana of futures for Kaladin while not being bothered to do much else for his second son than give his an apprenticeship as the 3rd carpenter knowing full well Tien would never make a living in Heartstone with it is simply baffling. Tien deserved better and it saddens me because Lirrin could have given him better, had he not been obsessed in sending Kaladin to Karbranth.

Tien deserved better and it saddens me because Lirrin could have given him better, had he not been obsessed in sending Kaladin to Karbranth. I don't think Lirin was a patticularly good parent though. Maybe it is just the snapshot we see of him but almost everything he does seems to relate to his personal way of life and his goal to have Kaladin move up in terms of social rank and become a great surgeon. I kinda think he's like one of those atheletes who want their child to be just like them, but better. However, to give some benefit of the doubt... Lirin seems to want to honour his ancestors; he doesn't want to waste all the work they've done. But, it is possible that he realises that his only real skill in life is surgery and if he can't teach Tien that maybe it is best he make his own way. On the other hand, Kaladin has a genuine shot at being a great surgeon and knowing the bond they have, it is also possible Kaladin could take care of Tien. Pretty much empty guessing at this point, but it baffles me that such a good man could be such a relatively poor father.

For some magic systems, you seem to need "cracks" in your soul that the Investiture can seep into, in a way. But it's unclear what these cracks can be. Traumatic experiences and emotional distress certainly, and physical violence possibly (though physical violence often leads to emotional scars as well). But (Cosmere spoilers) Hide contents using Aons doesn't seem to require cracks, unless the Shaod creates (or requires) cracks somehow (which is quite possibly true, actually, but I haven't seen anything about it). Awakening doesn't either, unless the smaller "base" soul of a Nalthian is "cracked" by default. You could argue that those magic systems are different, somehow, but... Thinking on it. Raoden isn't broken at all when the Shaod takes him. Brandon has said something to the effect of him being a protagonist who doesn't have anything to overcome from his past. Sel, though has investiture that doesn't work like the forms on other planets (save maybe threnody and first of the sun). There's no consumable necessary to make it work. The broken-ness seems to be the planet itself, instead. Or at least between the cognitive amd physical realms. Good point on Awakening. Though, perhaps the brokeness there is a transfered break. Breaths come from other people. Essentially part lf their soul broken away from their being, maybe? That might be a stretch, I guess. Edited November 30, 2016 by Massik
