Bacaue the planet doesnt change revolution around the sun, only rotational direction, there would be a period when the axis that the planet rotates on is directly facing the sun leaving the other half in total darkness. It would happen twice a year, though the rest of the year would be slightly different from earths. It would, however, explain that period leading up to the winter season. Sorry if it doesn't make any actual sense, I just saw this thread a while ago and popped in with an idea. I suppose I'm not really qualified as an astrophysicist. Maybe the real astrophysicists can take a look at my idea and see if it will work.
