DeadFencer Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 I keep visiting bookstores where Mistborn is categorized as young adult (teenage) fiction. I wouldn't entirely mind this, but only the first three books are categorized as YA by these bookstores. I'm currently in on where the first three books are in YA, and the others are under science fiction/fantasy. What's up with that?

Some bookstores will shelve by audience and some by genre.
WeiryWriter he/him Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 The thing to keep in mind is that genre is almost entirely a marketing thing. Mistborn Era 1 was originally released as an Adult fantasy (and still is), it was later repackaged and re-released with new covers by Tor's teen imprint as a YA for a number of reasons, such as it having a teenaged girl protagonist. Mistborn Era 2 has only been released as an adult fantasy because it does not have the same YA-ness. Generally YA books are shelved together regardless of genre whereas Adult books are shelved by genre. 1
