Pagerunner he/him Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 Is that Aon Rao on the cover? Not the book's cover, the cover of the book on the cover of the book. Never mind, you all know what I mean. 2
masaru Posted June 21, 2016 Author Posted June 21, 2016 Doesn't seem so: http://coppermind.net/wiki/File:Aon_Rao.svg
Pagerunner he/him Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 There's more than a passing resemblance between them. AA has arcs instead of circles, and they are positioned at the points of the interior square instead of along the edges. Even if it's not that particular Aon, it still might be an Aon. Are we sure that's Khriss on the cover? Secret History spoilers: It could be one of the Ire; they wore hooded robes, and they would have a book with an Aon on the front. But if it isn't an Aon, I wonder what the particular significance of that symbol is? It's certainly not random; it's the only distinguishing feature on the cover!

Great cover, btw, gets me hyped for Arcanum Unbounded. Also, is it just me, or is it by the same artist who did Sixth of the Dusk and Perfect State covers? If so, can anyone point me to who the artist is?
Windrunner he/him Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 I believe that symbol is the new symbol of the cosmere, recently unveiled at Phoenix ComicCon. I don't love the cover, it seems bland to me. 5
Curious Anamaximder he/him Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 It does not seem to be any of the Aons in the coppermind.
Rasarr she/her Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 The sun in the symbol has sixteen rays. Nice detail. 2
Brightness Enna she/her Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 The symbol looks to be the one @Windrunner pointed out. That's cool - I haven't seen it before. Finally there's a symbol for the whole cosmere, though. Time to make some buttons. It couldn't be an Aon anyway, though, because Aons are constructed pretty much purely out of Aon Aon, which is a curve and a line and a dot. That symbol doesn't have any straight lines at all. Add a few, and it would look much like an Aon, but... not as it stands. That's actually kind of interesting. Elantris is set first in the timeline of the cosmere, right? So it could be that Sel is where the people who emigrated from Yolen went first. After all... (Secret History spoilers) The Ire seem pretty up on things, and they obviously have some connection to Sel. My first thought was that maybe the symbol was some combination of different languages throughout the cosmere, but that wouldn't make sense because of timing issues and what it looks like versus what we know of symbols so far. It could be that all the languages and symbols in the entire cosmere all derived from the same original Yolen one. That... is probably the case, actually. It bears a lot of similarities to the Aons. I wonder if it's a stylized map of the cosmere. The sun is in the middle and could give us a clue to whatever/whoever Adonalsium was. The fact that it has sixteen rays seems significant to me. I'm probably just reading into this too much, but the sun's shape (a circle with rays) could also mean that Adonalsium wasn't just a holder of all the Shards' power, he was able to reconcile all of them. (random thought: did Scadrial mess with anybody else's orbit when it was slightly out of whack?) 2
Ward Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 I feel a bit crestfallen at Tor's official announcement of the contents of Arcanum Unbounded. Yes, I knew it was going to put in print all the e-books I had already purchased and read, but I was hoping for a bit more Sanderfan-service than Allomancer Jak and Edgedancer.

And, for those of us with all the MAG books, it's just Edgedancer! I'm okay with that, though - any time spent on new short stories would be time away from SA3. Sure, a lot of people would have liked a Lopen short story, or maybe a Nalthis/Threnody/new Shardworld story, but I'd rather Brandon focus on making Stormlight a priority.

masaru Posted June 21, 2016 Author Posted June 21, 2016 Not mentioned in announcement, but holding out hope for the cosmere star chart and Khriss intros to each planet as non-I-bought-that-ebook-already content.
Pagerunner he/him Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 Oh, yeah, there are a lot of Vax theories riding on that star chart. About the Cosmere symbol, does anyone know any context for it? Is it the symbol for the whole Cosmere? (Which would seem a little hokey to me... it's not real-life has a symbol for our universe.) Or is it a new symbol somewhere in the Cosmere?

He mentioned the release on Reddit, and confirmed Allomancer Jak in one of the responses. It's listed on the site — it's the 4th bullet point in the link, I guess you missed it? 1

Here are some speculations on Tumblr (I kind of buy the last theory.): 4
WeiryWriter he/him Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 Hmm I'd actually flip it around to match the description of the Three Realms in Secret History. The 16 point star represents the Spiritual Realm, the light of which, the 4 point star, crosses the Cognitive Realm, the circle, and shines on the Physical Realm, the outer arcs. 1
Esaias he/him Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Peter answered a couple questions on reddit. "It's Khriss, some years after White Sand. Perhaps around the time she wrote the planetary system essays that are included in the book." (referring to the woman on the cover). "The symbol on the book she's holding is the symbol for the Cosmere." I wonder why the cosmere needs a symbol? What is it used for? 1

Pagerunner he/him Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 (edited) Seems a little odd there will be a White Sand excerpt in the collection, considering the first graphic novel will be out already. Will it be a portion straight out of the non-canon draft? A passage that hasn't changed in the adaptation, so that portion becomes canon? Or was it edited and rewritten to match the graphic novel? Is it even going to be from the beginning of the novel, or maybe throw us in somewhere in the middle, that hasn't been adapted yet? EDIT: Ignore most of what I said. I just reread the announcement, and it's coming from the graphic novel. Which, again, is a little odd, since it will be out already, so it's not like it's a preview. I guess it's to get general Tor readers aware of the graphic novel, which is actually a pretty decent idea. Edited June 22, 2016 by Pagerunner
Asperity he/him Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 So is that Cosmere symbol THE symbol, or is that like a rough-draft quick sketch of the symbol? I know the design and structure will stay the same but I'm curious if that's the spruced-up fancy ~official~ version or not.

Waiting to see more Knights Radiant and Elantrian powers before I decide on a glyph and an Aon, respectively. No idea what to do for Nalthis yet...
