Perhaps they're a sorta super-open gateway, constantly leaking Investiture? Though if so it makes me wonder why it doesn't "burn" away. That thought has crossed my mind before. I suspect that other planets would have their own "gateway" type of thing, with different methods of opening them (Aons/Forms on Elantris for example).
