Oversleep Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 So, let's say you need your heroes to get around the city. On their own, so preferably no public transport and if they had a car, they wouldn't need a special way, right? So, what are your ideas? Or what interesting solutions have you seen?Of course, flight and teleportation does not need to be pointed out.Other interesting ideas: Of course, Lurching and Steelpushing (IIRC Newton in Reckoners did something similar to Steelpushing) parkour (for example, Assassin's Creed and Mirror's Edge). It's mostly running, but an efficient one and can get you to places normally unavailable grappling hooks to swing around (superheroes, the most famous: Spiderman. Also, metalbenders from Avatar) inFamous 1 & 2 had Cole who manipulated electricity - he jumped on tram traction and slided around
Bugsy he/him Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Digitalization would be a fun one to play around with. Having your character being able to go through electronic devices would let him quickly access data like pictures on the phones he's in, but would leave him vulnerable to blindspots and things like EMPs Another good one would be slowing time. This, IMO, would be best if it isn't controllable by the character himself, but is rather a natural effect or co-symptom of the problem. For example, if evil void monsters are jumping in to the dimension from another, say that the sudden influx of mass causes space-time to warp and slow. If you need an explanation for why he isn't effected, say it's because he's the anchor of the invasion somehow, and since he's at the eye it doesn't affect him. This would make your character able to use this whenever the monsters attack, but keep him from getting too OP
Landis963 he/him Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Infamous had a lot of cool ways to get around. You had Cole's electricity stunts, you had Kuo's ability to make an icy launchpad and create a glider from frost crystals, you had Nix's rocket-powered flight, Fetch's neon-blinking, Gene's hard light wing things, the concrete slide thing... The list goes on and on.
Quiver he/him Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 The main city stye setting I'm tinkering with lately is...kind of like Venice. Canals, streets of water, that sort of thing... So, I use boats. 1
Pathfinder Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 (edited) Phasing. The reason flying gets you places faster is you don't have to go around buildings, just fly over them. Same stands for phasing. Just run in a straight line passing through all obstacles like they aren't there. Edited May 19, 2016 by Pathfinder

Just run in a straight line passing through all obstacles like they aren't there. Actually the greatest advantage of being able to flight is the speed. Flying speed >> running speed. Even if you had to fly wround the buildings, going the same path as the runner, the flier will arrive at destination much earlier. Phasing, totally forgot about that. Generally all the characters who Do Not Need A Door - so going through walls, either by phasing (Shadowcat) or just knocking them down (Juggernaut).

Lol Marasi herself pointed out that the greatest advantage of flight is going in a straight line. That the escape pod travels slower than a train, but not having to worry about what is between those two points is a huge advantage. But that comes down to semantics/personal opinion.
Oversleep Posted May 20, 2016 Author Posted May 20, 2016 Well, I'm talking about means of personal travel. If a character can go about the speed of a train, that's a Steelrunner. If character has ability of flight, he's faster than a runner (compare all the examples of personal flight in fiction - I cannot recall a single flying character that was slower than a running man).BTW, escape pod may be slower than a train, but a Coinshot is way faster than a train.

"Lyrical" flight, the kind that emphasizes poetry and stuff, doesn't seem to be in the same speed range as sheer sprinting; t's advantage is mostly maneuverability.
