There are definite risks.  It's easy to break a tooth on those things.  Not to mention the damage to your spiritweb...

There are easier ways to get magic powers. However, they require donation, swallowing certain bits of metal, living your whole life in one spot and being good at something, oaths that bond you to a piece of a dead god, etc.
