Atkion he/him Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I was just wondering, why glass beads, of all things? In just my imagination, it would be liquid, or maybe even gaseous. I've never seen souls manifested as solid objects before... (well, except in Stormlight Archive )
Bowiespoon he/him Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Its a world in which symmetry has importance, and the sphere is perfectly symmetrical from every angle. an example of symmetry affecting the world can be observed by the way that cut - and therefore more symmetrical gems - can hold more stormlight than uncut gemstones. 3
Atkion he/him Posted March 22, 2016 Author Posted March 22, 2016 But why solid spheres? Not stationary droplets of liquid or bubbles or something?
Bowiespoon he/him Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 But why solid spheres? Not stationary droplets of liquid or bubbles or something? Well, those would warp in contact with other spheres, no longer being perfectly symmetrical. BTW: I literally came up with this theory upon reading your post, so I don't know if it holds any weight.
Atkion he/him Posted March 22, 2016 Author Posted March 22, 2016 (edited) Well, I imagine that souls coming in contact with other souls would, naturally, temporarily distort them in some way, but maybe I'm wrong. You could be on to something there. Edited March 22, 2016 by CastleStorm30038
Brgst13 Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I think that this is a reflection of the gemstones as the storehouse of investiture in Roshar. The Cognitive investiture of a soul is represented as a "stone", which is a glass bead. These beads are ready to receive investiture in the form of Stormlight in order to change during Soulcasting, so a bead makes perfect sense. It's nothing more than the projection of the system from the Physical realm into the Cognitive. 2
Atkion he/him Posted March 22, 2016 Author Posted March 22, 2016 Hm. Good point. I can't come up with a rebuttal to that one.
Voidus Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I highly recommend reading Mistborn Secret History for lots of tidbits on the cognitive realm.
