Charlie.x.3000 Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Just how important is Atium in Mistborn fights? Due to the mechanics of Atium, if your reaction speed is fast enough, then you make more use out of the Atium. If your opponent is punching you, you react and grab their hand. Since this is the result of them punching you, it was not foreseen by your opponents Atium. If they don't react to your hand, then you succeed. Atium can, essentially, only see as far as the opponent's reaction time. This means that the person with a faster reaction time would 'see' more of the future than the person with a slower reaction. Resulting in overall advantage for the person with faster reactions. Note: Mistborn are usually very agile so they can move when they react to things, unlike perhaps a Koloss. An example of this is Vin vs Shan. Shan was surprised by the extra Atium shadows, allowing Vin to kill Shan, despite Shan still having Atium on. Therefore we know that failure to react is still possible, even with Atium burning. (Burning Atium expands some of your mind)

In the former case it doesn't really help at all, you see too many futures to be able to react to them all, it's not that Vins atium was better than Shans it's just that she was prepared.
natc Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 It expands your mind to be able to process the information of a shadow (technically, spiritual Connection). If the prediction powers suddenly start giving completely indecisive results of course you would fumble over which to follow if at all. I'm not getting that hypothetical setup here. If both were burning atium why would you even be reacting to an atium shadow anyway when there's basically nothing meaningful to see? The only time reaction time matters is when someone isn't burning atium.
