kaladinthewindrunner
Hi, This theory just came to me, is really insignificant, and definitely needs some work, but I just thought I'd bring it up. And this might already exist, so... ShardMinds are people who posses a shard, AKA a piece of god, right? Does that mean that we can call all Knights radiant as ShardMinds? I mean, after Odium killed Honor, Honor became all spren right? Sly has even referred to herself as "a piece of god". Also note that Dalinar was able to bond with the Highfather, probably the largest piece of Honor left. Doesn't this bond show that the bond can exist between all parts of Adonalsium big or small? Who knows, Maybe Im just spitting nonsense please feel free to correct me if i am uninformed. thanks!
DreamEternal
People who hold Shards of Adonalsium are generaly called "Vessels" (in-universe) or shardholders, and they provide the mind that directs the power of those shards. Radiants are something completely different, since they only share a bond with Splinters, and those Splinters already have minds on their own. ps: it is Stormfather. Ari
So Shards are something very different to Spren for one big reason: Shards are power held together and directed by a pre-existing mind. Spren, however, are pieces of a shattered power that gained sentience after it was no longer significantly held together by a pre-existing mind. (And presumably there are also some equivalents out there that exist from innate investiture gaining sentience too, as Spren apparently already existed when Honour and Cultivation showed up on Roshar)
ccstat
Welcome to the forums! I think the analogy is a fair one, and it is a difference in degree more than kind (though there are important differences). The magical abilities of Radiants and the deific powers of Vessels are both due to the piece of power they hold. This power is the source of all magic in the Cosmere, as well as each person's "spark of life"--it all comes from what Brandon had repeatedly described as "pieces of the power of creation." A Shard is much, much larger than a spren, and the KR bond with a spren is more of a partnership than an infusion of power, so I don't think you can safely assume much about one from what you learn of the other, but yes, the analogy is a good one. I suspect that is partly why we ended up with the distinctly confusing terms Shardholder and Shardbearer. The powers (shards and spren) and the roles of those who hold them (Vessels and Radiants) are closely tied together in Brandon's mind and in-world.
