Ask a Nemle Grad Student Anything!

Recommended Posts

The girl you call Honor Spren has convinced me to host this, and I hope that letting you ask me anything, will not only help me to better understand the humans of Aemudi, or Earth, but also abolish the rumors that some of you have about my kind.

This is an approximation of my appearance, though it is inaccurate. My hair is a lighter silver, my eyes a darker violet, and my proportions more realistic.

((My replies will be in double parentheses. Sorry I couldn't give more information on Eneless at the beginning of this. I'm running low on time, right now. I should be able to finalize a few terms soon.))

Where is Nemle located? What does it teach?

How often have you been to Aemudi?

What are the most common misconceptions about your kind?

The first thing you need to know, is that there are Seven realms, stacked like truif cakes. Aemudi is the middle realm. My people live in the uppermost realm, which we call The Traveler's Haven. And Nemle is not the name of the school I attend, but the name of my species, though we were once human too. My school teaches advanced elemental magic and the use of Realmatic Wells.

I have only had a few glimpses of Aemudi. It is generally sealed off from us. I have met a girl from Aemudi before, but she was a Nemle. She had the Element of dreams and was one of the most powerful magic users I have ever met.

Any paranormal activity in your realm is something seeping in from another one. More often then not, Nemle are indirectly the cause of this and are given the full blame. This has created the misconception that we are trouble makers. I can assure you, we are not.

Why is your kind the indirect cause of most transrealmatic anomalies in our realm?

By which name do you call our realm?

Across the realms, how common is knowledge of other realms?

What about your realm, is knowledge of other realms common there? If so, is that why it is called 'The Traveler's Haven'?

The Nemle do the most ((Imagine some super cool word for the equivalent of World Hopping here)). And while we do try to be careful . . . missions do go wrong occasionally. Even if someone else is responsible, the Nemle would have tried to stop them. If they are not stopped, we have failed.

. . . I have already told you. Aemudi.

Hmmm . . . Knowledge is the least common in Aemudi and Lyra. One can find information in Relats and The Domain of Wraiths, though it takes a bit of searching in the right places. Sol, the Twin Realm, is quite aware, but only interested in making contact with the other half of itself. Feywild and The Traveler's Haven are the most realmatically aware. We have a few trade routes set up with Feywild.

Every child is taught of other realms before they are five years old. So yes, I would say knowledge is quite common here.

The name comes from our religion. But it means that our realm is a safe place for us. It is where we can always come to rest after a long journey.

((Realmwalking, maybe?))

How exactly do Realmatic Wells work? What are they?

How does elemental magic work? How common is the ability to use it?

Why is Aemudi sealed off? Is there any way to get around that?

In what ways are Nemle different than humans?

((Are you planning a story for this character?))

((That sounds cool, I'll consider it. But then, it doesn't exactly fit with the means of travel.))

Realmatic Wells are the only gateways between realms. They look like a normal well, but the liquid is white and glowing. They can be easy to use, once you have had practice. There is more to it, but essentially, you dive into it and come out a different one. It is important to know which realm you wish to go to, or it becomes random. Sometimes, you will see Tumahab, the great Tusked fish that swims in the liquid between the realms. When you come out of a well, you are not wet.

Elemental magic is an innate part of being Nemle, though some are more powerful than others. It is impossible for other species to use, they have their own forms of magic, from their own spirit contracts. Everyone is born with their own element. I am a moonlight, my sister is a sunlight. I have a friend who is a fire and his brother is a lightning. ((They're some of my other characters. It's okay if you want to ask Eneless about them.)) Our appearances take after our elements. It is the reason I have silver hair and violet eyes, and my sister has golden hair and sky blue eyes.

The way it works, you must know what spell you would like to cast and hand motions are often needed. Closing your eyes can help too.

When our ancestors came up through the realms, they found Aemudi. But other humans already lived there and they did not want any others. Because we were so badly persecuted, we made a contract with the spirits to seal that realm off, so that none of us would ever have to go through that again. 'Our days of hardship are over.' We had said. 'We left those behind when we departed the Domain of Wraiths.'

But there must be way to slip through those barriers. I have heard of people going there. Texts! I've met people who went there. But they will never say how they went through.

Some of the differences between humans and us, are ear shape, eye color, hair color, and blood color. Our eyes and hair color change to match our element. An element of dreams could even change their hair and eye color based on emotions. Our blood is silver.

But pointed ears and strange colorings are part of any race that has long time dealings with spirits. Things like this have happened to other races, like the Ekorra and the Dooleema.

((I do have a sort-of-story planned for this character. She is part of a small team that will appear in all of my stories. I haven't exactly figured out her specific story, though I know her background, but I know her role in some other stories I have.))

You say other soecies have their own kinds of magic. Do people from Aemundi have their kind of magic then?

Can you tell more about those spirits? Where do they live, how do they interact with mortals, and what are the specific workings of contracts with them?

This is uncertain. I know that you react very strongly to things you consider paranormal. If there is magic on Aemudi, it is very slight.

Spirits are nearly everywhere. But I believe their home is in between the realms. On my first assignment, I was falling through the well and I looked to my left. There was an eye. An eye so vast, that it was there the whole time I fell.

Spirits are all so different. Some take the shape of glowing orbs, while others are skeletal fish. There are birds with colors too vibrant to be real and small figures of blue fire. Some can even take a human form, though if one looks at their eyes, they can see through the disguise. Their eyes are glowing orange, lilac, or maroon.

If a mortal can find a spirit willing to talk to it, then they can enter into a contract. The mortal will be granted something within the spirit's power, while the spirit will take something that the mortal holds dear. It could be concrete like a treasured possession or something as vague as an opportunity. They are then unbreakably bound to the contract and go their separate ways. Multiple people can enter into one. Sometimes whole races. You must be careful never to go into a contract with a younger spirit. The young ones will trick you into a curse, but older and wiser ones are fair in their dealings.

((I apologize for necroing, but I actually would like a question answered.))

Thom here, from the necromancer's guild. Who on earth (or aemudi, as you call it) are you, and what do you do? I am completely unfamiliar with the topics you are discussing, and would really like to learn. It all sounds fascinating.

((Hey there! Thanks for coming here. I thought this thread was dead for good, so thanks for bringing it back. :)))

As I told you, my name is Eneless. My parents are part of the nobility in our capital city. I and my sister, however, are still students. As part of our studies, I travel with a small team of four students to other realms and complete different training missions. This team consists of me, my sister Thiglena, Erif, and his brother Nithgil. Once, on a mission we had to retrieve a song stone from Lyra. The people there fuse them into their musical instruments and this causes them to be able to use magic when they play the instrument. We were caught stealing it and had to escape in a . . . strange manner. But overall, the mission was a success.

I think you might need to go a little more in-depth for me. I literally know nothing about you, this, the world you speak of, the magic- essentially, everything.

To start out, could you explain the magic system of your realm? And, maybe, just what your realm is?
