Might just be an American thing It's very common in German-speaking nations. Someone from Berlin = Berliner; someone from Munich (München) = Münchner; someone from Vienna (Wien) = Wiener . This applies to more than just people. Wiener schnitzel is Vienna-style schnitzel. Ayinger Wiessbier is Hefeweizen from Aying.
