DeadFencer Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 If a bullet were shot through a metalborn and into someone else, would it become a hemalurgic spike? If so, the number of accidental spikings would probably increase, since bullets going through people, though rare, is more common than swords going through and breaking off.
Argent he/him Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 How many of the books have you read? Because there is some information on this in Shadows of Self.
DeadFencer Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) SoS spoilers: Well yeah but I didn't want to spoil anything. I was thinking the other way: a normal bullet becomes a spike when fired. Edited January 13, 2016 by Moogle Please mark spoilers.
Edgedancer he/him Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) If the tip of a sword can break off and act as a spike then there is no reason a bullet can't act as a spike. The hard part would be the intent and hitting a bind point. SoS Well yeah but I didn't want to spoil anything. I was thinking the other way: a normal bullet becomes a spike when fired. But you do realize how big a spoiler this statement could be, yes? Edited January 13, 2016 by Edgedancer
Pechvarry Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) Big stopper is intent. Apparently, you need to intend to spike someone in order for it to happen. Ruin supplied the intent for Spook's stabbing. Another thing to note is that you don't necessarily need the bullet to immediately get lodged in a recipient. Note how Marsh spikes a Smoker out in the 'burbs and then travels to Luthadel to put it in someone. I have a thread floating around here about using Pewter bullets and a healthy dose of intent to kill Bloodmakers. I suggested pewter pellets in a shotgun to optimize chances of hitting the binding point, but I realize now a potential problem: Bullets shatter. Pellets would destroy. It's possible pulverized flesh would make it difficult/impossible to utilize the bind point. My line of thinking here is TenSoon in HoA, needing to form organs correctly around his spikes, even though he doesn't need said organs. But that's a recipient, not a donor. So, you know, keep the pewter pellets handy. EDIT: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/4275-remember-your-pewter-bullets/ I rehash several of the same points in my 2nd post in that thread. DeadFencer Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 Do we have a WoB on needing intent to spike?
Moogle Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 We have a WoB on this question: Q: If you shot Miles with pewter bullets through the heart, would the bullets become hemalurgically charged and remove Miles’s bloodmaking ability? A: Umm, you would have to get them in exactly the right place. Q: Oh, so it’s more than just the heart, it’s got to be the right place in the heart? A: Well, you have to, it’s like acupuncture. A hemalurgic spike has to be specifically placed. Q: Well, I don’t mean for placement. I just mean for making Miles a donor. A: You could hemalurgically steal Miles’s power. Q: With pewter bullets? A: I don’t know that bullets would work. But they might. How about this, it is theoretically possible to do what you just described. If you knew what you were doing, because intention is part of a lot of the magic system. Intention is involved. It’s tricky because Ruin did it to people who didn’t know what they were doing, but… Q: But, Ruin intended to do it, though. A: But, Ruin intended to do it and knows how to manipulate it so that intentions would happen. Intention is very important, if you read through the magics, to a lot of them. Q: It is part of the cognitive aspect. A: Yes. (source) 5
