 By the end of WoK's we find out that hes not getting answers to his question. Its prerecorded words sent through time that hes been receiving. His last vision was exactly the same as his first. So heres where my confusion begins. In the vision where hes the farmer and is attacked by (sorry cant remember what they called it) that creature he uses the fireplace poker to fight off the beast using  modern forms. Even the KR mention they have never seen his forms and that hes very skilled and even offer him a place to train with them. His wife claims her husband has never held a weapon in his life. So either this farmer was doing the best he could and managed it on his own, or Dalinar does have some kind of effect on these vision. I'd love to hear some your ideas on this.

When Dalinar is having one of his visions, he isn't simply an impassive observer. He sees them through the eyes and mind of someone IN that vision.. for all intents, he IS that person for the duration of the vision... does that help?

Q: In Dalinar's visions, he interacted with people in ways that seemed strange and unexpected to those he was interacting with, and they responded appropriately.  Did his actions actually influence the past, or not? For example, did he help influence Nohadon to write The Way of Kings?

A: No, they were just projections sent into his mind.

It just happened that he was projected into the mind of a man who knew the modern sword forms intimately enough thousands of years ago to cause a PROFESSIONAL WARRIOR to comment on unfamiliar stances?

And feverstone keep, he was a layabout with almost no motivation. To the point where his counterparts found his order to "stay sharp"noteworthy? That guy suddenly remembered how to be a soldier on watch, at that moment, of his own volition? I doubt it..

It may only be the vision interacting with his mind, but there is interaction. No question....

Thats whats confusing me though. If hes an impassive observer or its being projected into his mind. Where did the skill of the farmer come from. and between the 2 replies it sounds like one person is saying he IS the famer for the duration and has control and the other says its all in his head as a vision.

@Sickly

Yes, of course. I cut out some commentary from the question, but perhaps I should have included it.

Note: This is a very interesting question to ask because both answers reveal something very interesting.  A yes says that time travel in some form is possible under Cosmere magic; a no says that the dying Tanavast had enough power and awareness available to him to create some extremely detailed and highly interactive simulations, which is far more capability than Leras had while dying!)

He isn't going back in time.. his interaction is simply in his mind with the vision. Not the historical figures in question..

Which really is quite a feat on the part of Tanavast.. like an interactive cut scene in a video game. One that responds specifically to your input and reactions...

Which makes you wonder just how in-depth the simulation was. Did the simulated people act exactly the same as their counterparts would have? If so, isn't that effectively creating a person and then killing them minutes later when the vision is over?

I don't think so.. if you break it right down, it feels an awful lot like a "choose your own adventure" book. Maybe the personalities were right, but at the bottom, he was playing an external memory projected into his mind. I just happened to have some really awesome interactives..
