Draginon he/him Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 Heard the Ghostbusters theme song on the radio and remembered a peeve. When someone hates on a film/show/book for misogynistic reasons. Ghostbusters (2016) was a pretty good film but not a lot like it just because it had women in it. Whenever I see any reception for that film 90% can't come up with any reason why they hate it other than the main characters being women or they say 'I liked it, but I would've preferred guys instead' and in an industry where not many women are lead roles this is a stupid thing to hate a film on. Also this complaint isn't just from men, I had a female coworker who didn't want to see it because they were women instead of men. Now granted for that film I did have jokes about it when it was first announced but I got that out of my system by the time the trailers started arriving 1

I just spent a while trying to figure out if I could dress in a way that would make them leave me alone and then arguing with myself that that's classic victim blaming and I have no control over someone else and then figuring out what I actually wanted to wear and then dealing with the panic. Sigh.

Isn't it marvelous?" thing they had going on. It's also why nobody complains about Sarah Connor or Ellen Ripley, but why everyone loses their crap about Rey. It's all marketing. 1
SilverTiger she/her Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 My pet peeves? Well, first would be authors who try way too hard to make their books seem diverse and inclusive and non-racist or -sexist and stuff. It is not the right way to approach writing a book. The second pet peeve is people who blame the Catholic Church for stuff a few priests/brothers did, or stuff that it did centuries ago. It does a lot more good today than bad. Another pet peeve of mine is the myth of the Dark Ages= Medieval Era. The Medieval Era was actually really good for people, but some group that disliked the Church later on (the Church had a lot of good influence in the Medieval Era) tried to cover it up by calling it the Dark Ages and saying they were bad. True history, people. 1
Orlion Blight he/him Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Methinks someone here is Catholic

Darkness Ascendant he/him Posted November 3, 2017 Posted November 3, 2017 I thought Ghostbusters (2016) was full of stupid and forced humour. 1

AngelEy3 he/him Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 (edited) Not so much a pet peeve, but... Why don't physical copies of books have an option to include the digital version for a small extra fee? Like buying a Blu-ray disc. You can choose to buy just the disc, or you can almost always find one that includes the digital version for either the same price or just a few dollars more. So why not books? Let's say the list price is $24.99. Why can't I get both versions for say, $29.99? Edited November 8, 2017 by AngelEy3

Orlion Blight he/him Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 With a Blu-ray, the product is shrink wrapped so the code used to get the digital copy can be protected. Books aren't shrink wrapped. I could walk into a book store, get the code and have a free digital book. That then means whoever ends up honestly buying it will have a worthless code. Those are a couple problems I can think of. Essentially, it means that having a bookstore structure to sell physical books is currently and woefully unable to handle your desire. 1

I think that some this could be solved by using one of those 'scratch off' codes. That way you could at least check to see if the code has been used, and it would make it more obvious if someone was trying to copy it in the store. Edit: Ninjaed by a better idea. I actually think this is a better idea. The receipt idea would require an overhaul of the point of sale software. Another idea might be that, like with gift cards, the code needs to be activated. But that also runs into infrastructure problems.
