Hey, all. Just a fun little idea I had on my commute to work. Do you think the colour of gem Stormlight is contained in has any significance? Colour can often impact our moods and flavour our thoughts. I wonder if the same holds true on Roshar, or if the colour of gem/light has even other effects(other than the obvious Ten Essences, Soulcasting, etc.) Anyone know if Stormlight and colour has been asked/discussed before?

Could make a fun re-read, noting the colour of Stormlight in each scene and how people act.

I don't have any answers, but I do remember a passage in a book (not sure if it's TWoK or WoR as I am abroad currently) where Syl lands beside a water pool that is illuminated by a purple stormlight emitting sphere and Kaladin has the impression that her features/face change. So possibly yes?

Interesting theory. My assumption is yes, since certain gemstones are considered more valuable than others, but I don't think it's been explained yet. So far Kaladin (our furthest proto-radiant at the moment) has been slowly learning how to use stormlight in its most basic form. I think once he starts fine-tuning things, we'll see a little more variety in what the gemstones can do.

If the desolation doesn't go well, humanity will have to develop neon pink spheres in a hurry.

Those weapons of mass destruction would blind the voidbringers just long enough for a special unit of radiants with anti-pink filters to flood in and finish them off.

I'll lead them.

The varying value of gemstones is based on their soulcasting utility. So emeralds are most valuable because they can be used to make food, while diamonds are less valuable because plain crystal isn't something they need much of.

Oh, well, there we go then. They each do different things. I assume that means Radiants can do something different with them?

Or perhaps Radiants could "get more"(runs out slower, takes less to use Surges, more potency) out of stormlight from gems that match their Order's dominant color. Perhaps Windrunners would be the most efficient with using light from sapphires, for example.

As far as we know at the moment, the type of gem is only relevant for soulcasting.

True, but Jasnah and Shallan are both soulcasters, so I think at least some orders of Radiants will use that difference.

There are WoB that imply at least two colours of stormlight.
First, the usual stormlight, that is "filtered" by the gemstones. OP's theory might still apply.
Second, the black light from King G's sphere; noncanonical called voidlight.

Will post the exact quote tomorrow, if nobody does it before.

I wonder if the colour has to do with the amount of stormlight the gemstone can hold. (Capacity) I also wonder if that has any bearing on the  soulcasting use. It would seem to me that the more that the photo-radiants use their abilities, they may develop more of an awareness of the amount of stormlight that they use and that is held in a specific gem.

I agree in thinking that certain kinds of gems likely give off different colors because of the capacity or efficiency of holding in Stormlight. It might be that when glowing or using Stormlight, the way that you use it gives off a different color light depending on what surges you have access to. Sort of like certain fabrials depend on a certain kind of gem, the Surges you use that fabrials mimic would determine what color you glow.
