A Joe in the Bush
First off, let's assume that Steelrunners automatically speed their minds up as well as their body, otherwise they would be constantly crashing into things. Now let's take a Steelrunner/Pulser Twinborn. (Feruchemical!Steel, Allomantic!Cadmium.) The Twinborn pops up a Cadmium bubble, slowing down everyone around her, but then taps speed, returning herself to normal speed when compared to people outside the bubble. You can now communicate with people outside the bubble, while everyone around you is frozen. Good for lots of things, such as defusing bombs, searching a person, getting outside help, and so on. Why do I bring this up? Because Marasi is a Pulser, and there is a Feruchemical!Steel Spike floating about. I'd bet that somehow, she ends up with it.
natc
Speeding up reflexes are the most I'd accept steel to grant for the "stops you from dying to your powers" abilities. Mental speed outright is storable in a different metal. She would also only be able to communicate with gestures or writing, since the air itself is decelerated. Kaymyth she/her
You'd have to use a visual form of communication, as it's established that time bubbles mess with sound transfer over the barrier.

The steelrunner in the Preview chapters managed to position themself in four different places, take aim, and fire fast enough that all four bullets made one sound. You'd need a lot more than sped up reflexes for that. (Admittedly, they could have multiple spikes.)
Guest
Reflex acceleration as part of Speed makes sense, and would allow a Steelrunner to maintain balance and equilibrium. Not crashing into things would be a matter of practice, much like anyone engaged in any high-speed sport. Note that those accelerated reflexes could allow for many things that would APPEAR to be caused my Mental acceleration (such as performing complex hand-to-hand fighting), but in fact most of the actions would be automatic through practice and training. More than one spike would be antithetical, not to mention self-defeating, to the murderer's aims.
A Joe in the Bush
which is kinda my point. I think that using physical speed would still allow forsome typeof mental speedup as well. Also, Multiple spikes allows Ruin to have more influence. Not control. There are several theories that part of Ruin is seperate from Harmony, in order to fix the imbalance of their powers. jag519 he/him
I'd say the way it speeds you up is a lot like bendalloy's speed bubble, so when you use it, it's pretty much like everyone around you is going in slow motion. So technically it's speeding up your mind, but really just in the way that all of you is now going faster (Think of Xmen DoFP Quicksilver) But yeah, you'd need to store a lot of speed to go that fast for you to be going the same speed as the group outside of the bubble. Galavantes
I'd have to hunt down the quote. But WoB is that all physical metals actually do have a mental aspect to them as well that allows you to use the new abilities. ie: Atium floods the mind with new information so the mind is also expanded to allow it to process that information. You don't need a mental upgrade for making yourself younger . . .Though it's clear that steelrunners don't ever crash into walls or anything, reflexes aren't exactly a conscious phenomenon.
