Yeah, the Sanderson Elimination has definitely skewed things rep-wise. Pretty much everyone who has participated has experienced a huge jump in rep, but that's just something that happens in a system like this. Maybe not a flaw of the system per se, but certainly a quirk.

Feather, the rep system isn't intended to be anything more than a general display of participation in the community. I think things like Sanderson Elimination deserve the amount of rep that they get precisely because they focus on the community.

I know, I'm aware. It's just been something that's been talked about a bit. I didn't mean to seem critical, guys. Light knows I'm not alowed to complain about other people getting rep! I've tended to come down on the side of, let people have their fun and throw rep around, but there are a few people who are concerned.

Isn't chaos introducing a series of new ranks though?

Indeed I am, but it is trickier than you think to see what order eighty new reputation levels should go in :)

Also, that list is quite silly in how it missed some obvious things. Namely, what do you think rep level 1337 is :P

Brandon don't really count. If he said only hi even so he would receive 50 upvotes for the trouble of come here say something to us. And let me be frank the man deserve which and every upvote, after all without him we wouldn' t be here =)

All hail to BS =)

Same with Peter, though to a lesser degree.

Indeed, I strongly approve of Peter having the #2 rep on the site. Bout time!

I have a negarep name I believe could be nice, but only if taken humorously - "Scalzi".

To clarify, I quite liked him, so it is nothing against him, just a joke as for his status.

Eighty? That is a lot.

Will the system for getting points be the same? (That is, upvotes and downvotes)

Will we still have the old levels too, or will the new system completely replace the old one?

Are any of the levels going to have the same name as one we currently have?

:P Meh.

While I'm here, I might as well ask. What's the meaning of the dots above the Rep Points, under where it says 'Members'?

They are pips that represent the number of posts you've made.  I think 3 pips are 100 posts, 4 are 500 posts, and 5 are 1000 posts.

Ok. Thanks!

EDIT: I just noticed that Peter has reached 1028 and is now Adonalsium. So 1024+ is Adonalsium, except for 1337. Interesting...

The upvote and downvote system will remain identical. Only the reputation ranks will be different. The new rank levels will end up replacing the old system, but the titles that currently exist will be incorporated into the new one. For example, Knights Radiant will still be a rank, but it won't be at the position it currently is in.

The idea is to make the reputation levels much more sustainable for the next five years and beyond. The highest rep level will be much higher, and Brandon won't have it at this current time. There will be much more progression. Right now after Shard, it takes double the rep to get to the next level. In the new scheme, it will be a more linear progression.

There will be many new ranks. Some silly, some serious, and some incredibly obscure (but still cosmere related). Again my difficulty is mostly in how I should rate magic users in different worlds against each other :P

Ok, great. I see what you mean about power level. Especially between Surgebinders and AonDor Roshar and Selian magics. Tough call. (Personally, I'd say AonDor because it's less limited, but what about Forgery? Is that less powerful than, say, Hemalurgy?) And I would have no idea where to put Awakeners.

Actually, wouldn't it be even worse in a specific world? Like, is a Windrunner mor powerful than a Lightweaver? What about a Mistborn vs. a Feruchemist?

So how high will it go now? 4096? Higher?

Once you get the new ranks all up an running, are you gonna list them out somewhere or gonna leave it up to us to "discover" all the ranks ourselves?

It is higher than that, but I will not say anything more on that :)

Gah. That's a lot. If it were that number, then with the previous figure of eighty we would have a change every 50 points or so. Weighted toward the beginning...

Nevermind. I forgot about the negatives. So, that makes every 100 or so points a change. That'll be fun.

Side note: Is the number exactly eighty? It would be neat if so, because, you know, 16x5.

EDIT: I went back and counted our current ranks. We have 24, counting Adonalsium twice. That will be almost four times as much. Wow.

Is there any ballpark for when the system will come into play? Like, a month or two years?

Oh, those eighty rankings are just the positive reputation levels. There will be new and hilarious negative reputation levels as well.

I intend to implement it slightly before Words of Radiance or within a week of its release.

Posted (edited)

Ok. Again. Gah. 50 points per level (on average) at least. Right now it's (only counting positives) about 80 points per rank. That may not seem like much, but it's a sizable increase because the levels go up so much higher.

Oh, yes, the week of Words of Radiance sounds like a wonderful idea. Won't you be working too much, though? Managing the servers and moderating and things like that?

Thanks for getting me even more excited for the first week of March.

That's a fairly accurate assessment, though obviously at the lower and higher ends things move much faster.

Right. The lower end makes sense, because you want to make the first few goals easily reachable and gradually increase the difficulty. But why the higher faster too? Is that because you're just going through points faster, or are there a bunch of levels close together at the top?

Posted

I meant that in the higher levels, it will take a lot more than 50 to go up in level.

Posted (edited)

Right. I got that. Wouldn't that be slower, though?

EDIT: Will Adonalsium still be the top level?
