TheOneKEA
Near the end of The Way of Kings, Jasnah's admonishes Shallan pretty strongly for traveling to Shadesmar with only a single dim sphere. This suggests to me that there is a minimum safe number of spheres or a minimum number of lumens of Stormlight that is needed to travel to Shadesmar safely on Roshar, and maybe larger numbers of spheres or a larger sum of lumens is needed to do anything one you're there. Does anyone have any ideas on what those amounts could be?
Aethling
I always interpreted it that she had a very low light sphere, and that was why Jasnah took her to task. My guess would be the number for safety would vary depending on the type of sphere with diamond being less and saphire requiring more. Blue and red light just don't seem to carry as far as white light, which is probably the reason the old-style military surplus flashlights had blue and red filters you could use. TheOneKEA
That's a good point. I'd love to know if certain types of spheres are better for traveling to Shadesmar and if the transition is easier if you have a lot of spheres, if you have spheres of certain colors, or if you have very bright spheres. Nepene
I'd guess that the spheres give you spiritual energy or investiture, as Kaladin had, and she was advising her that it was a poor idea to enter that realm without a lot of magical energy to deal with the common threats within. She was instantly attacked, so I imagine that was the main issue.
Satsuoni
She wasn't attacked, or rather, it is inconclusive (might have been her perception when drowning). The point is, you apparently need Stormlight to control aspects of Shadesmar, like making a raft. Otherwise, you'd just be in a sea of beads, which should act like quicksand, and well... That is kind of stupid end.
Nepene
A hand grabbed her and pulled her down. Pretty attacky in my books. I agree that the stormlight of Jasnah was used to control the beads and make a raft.
name_here
I think it's just amount of Stormlight. Since Shallan seems to be from the order associated with blood, a garnet should be the best for her to enter Shadesmar with. I imagine how much light is needed depends on how long they stay.
