ulyssessword he/him
So, we all know that Hoid does something significant in most of the Cosmere books, but I haven't seen if there was a coherent plan yet. here's what I know so far: (mostly from here Elantris: he helps arm and move shipments of supplies into Elantris to help the Elantrians. Mistborn TFE: Gives Kelsier intel on house Renoux, and misdirects him re: Shan, telling him (and, by implication, Vin) that she is a Soother, which makes Vin discount her instincts that she is Mistborn. Mistborn WoA: Talks to the heroes re: the Terris camp, and later takes a bead of Lerasium, leaving one. (probably) Mistborn HoA: Would have helped Vin out in gathering intel, but she was "too smart for her own good" (or something like that) Warbreaker: Helps Siri to understand the culture and secrets better. Way of Kings: Many things. Alloy of Law: might have done something. Emperor's Soul: gets Shae imprisoned, she is later offered freedom in return for fixing the Emperor. I'm drawing a bit of a blank, overall. Can anyone see a consistent pattern?
Guest Jacob Santos
The key to strategy is knowing when to not fight. In the game of chess, who would you rather be: the one moving the pieces or the one being moved? In each of the instances, Hoid provided key intelligence or helped in such a way to prevent a major loss. The key to understanding is probably not in what he did, but what he might have prevented. It has been too long since I've listened to Mistborn. I'm not certain of details. Given Hoid's style in The Way of Kings, I would say that he has an indirect approach. It is not his way to fight the battles, but to push the players in ways so that they will move in a certain direction. Well, that is mostly something seers do, since they may see some details, but not everything. By telling someone all of what you know, they may in fact change everything and it may turn out badly or better (not sure if this subversion has ever been utilized). It is mostly bad though. Consequences and all that.
Asperity he/him
I'm hoping we're told a reason why Vin ignored Hoid in HoA since that trilogy is over sometime soon.
StormAtlas
I see Hoid as more of an impartial observer. Not that he dosnt have an agenda or influence whats happening but that he would rather personally avoid taking action and let others make their own decisions (though perhaps guided by his suggestions) Which makes me wonder if thats just Hoids style or if perhaps world travelers arnt suppose to meddle too much physically in other worlds besides their own ? Aethling he/him
Don't forget he also gives Hrathgen information the first time he appears in Elantris.
Yados
Don't forget that he stole the Moon Scepter. Hoid basically rules Sel's moon.
Nepene he/him
Some have suggested that Hoid wants to re-fuse the shards. I can imagine all of his actions there would aid that. He helped Elantris be re-established, thus gathering a large fraction of devotion's magic in one place to allow reconstitution. He has the moon scepter which may allow him to tap the local magic for whatever purpose or find large deposits of Devotion or Dominion's bodies. Yados
Some have suggested that Hoid wants to refuse the shards. I've posited that before, though Hoid seems to hold the idea of putting a man back together emotion by emotion in disdain when he speaks to Dalinar in WoK. Most likely, Hoid's intent towards the shards of Adonalsium-- keeping them seperate to reforging them-- coupled with what effect such a reforging would have on the 10 Shardworlds, life on which seems to have largely resulted from the Shatteringm, will be what classifies him as the Cosmere's ultimate hero or villain. FaeMofo
Is it possible that he wants to use forgery to reform the shards, he could have arranged for Shai to be locked up to test her skills to see whether she would be useful in the future? Aethling he/him
Hoid is always involving himself with the major characters. The only real exception is Alloy of Law where he is talking with the newlyweds. Inevitably, he gives them information or assistance that leads them to do what needs to be done or pushes them toward a certain understanding.
