FaeMofo
I was rereading Elantris in preparation for the Emperor's Soul and had a couple of questions, i'm not sure whether they have been brought up so I apologise if they have. Firstly has it been confirmed what caused the reod? If it is difficult to travel to Sel could Hoid have caused it when he entered the scene? Secondly, could it be difficult to travel to Sel because of the reod, if the cognitive realm changes could it not be something like the reod changing the aons in order to access the dor but instead changing the cognitive realm a little bit? Windrunner he/him
The Reod was caused by an earthquake changing the shape of Arelon, and by extension, the shape of the Aons, which caused all the preexisting Aons, like the Rao that made Elantris, to stop functioning. As far as we know, Odium was not behind this, as he'd left long before the Reod. As for your second question, the Cognitive Realm would probably change a bit, but I can't see why that would make Worldhopping more difficult. Guest Galavantes
My personal theory is that sel is difficult to reach through shadesmar because of the splintering of it's two native shards. I think that either the splintering itself or possibly the violence of the battle with Odium has disrupted the area of shadesmar around where Sel is located, making it either dangerous or simply difficult to navigate. Morsk he/him
I think it's the geography-based magic. On some level the land itself is alive with power, and this is either blinding and makes it hard to navigate Shadesmar, or it's dangerous and requires special precautions. Observer
Two things: One: The Dor is pressurized, which is why it fights to free itself via the Aons. Going into the shadesmar would probably end with you getting ejected back out in an energetic backlash for your trouble. Two: Sel magic is base din geography, and in Shadesmar all geography is flipped, seriously screwing up the place. This in and of itself is enough to make worldhopping a pain.
Starchampion he/him
My theory is a little simpler (if you can get 'simple' in the Cosmere.) I believe that the Shadesmar is connected, or focused, at the pool where the Elantrians went to die. It would explain why it's dangerous to travel through the Shadesmar on Sel, as the only one who we know of who hasn't died there was Raoden. We know he's strong-willed/stubborn enough to fight against it, and retain his sense of self.
Millennium
My personal theory is that if you were to somehow get to Sel's Cognitive aspect, you would not be able to find the Chasm: that something (which could simply be a function of not enough time passing, or it could be some scheme of Odium's) has kept Sel from incorporating it into its view of itself. Given the importance of form and geography on Sel, that fundamental mismatch could very well make travel more dangerous. It may also explain why Hoid showed up on essentially the other side of the world, almost as far from that mismatch as it's possible to get: that might be a somewhat safer path.
