Kobold King he/him Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 The Fractally Useful Numeration of Tactical Inquiries for the Most Excellent Sanderson (Or "FUNTIMES," for short) This list represents the master list of Reckonerverse questions. Questions are sorted by their potential value for this RP, with the highest priority inquiries occupying the first positions on the list. The questions I have gathered thus far are as follows (some include Firefight spoilers, so be wary): Can you tell us anything about High Epic despots on the west coast? Besides Oregon and the cities that Obliteration destroyed, are there any parts of the Fractured States rendered completely uninhabitable? What are some of the most common Epic powers? What is the approximate ratio between normal humans and Epics? What are the determining factors in an Epic's power level? Is there a correlation between Epic's past lives and their powers, or are their powers assigned at random? Are all Epics capable of communicating with Calamity, or was Regalia a special case? Is there anything you can tell us about the Epic named Night's Sorrow, gender, powers, or area of influence-wise? Can you tell us anything interesting about the Coven? Did Conflux face his weakness and remove it in so doing? Is the fear of losing a loved one a valid or potentially valid candidate for becoming an Epic's weakness? Will the Oregon turf wars ever be elaborated on in the novels? If Vin were an Epic, what would her powers and weakness be? Is there any chance of you eventually publishing an illustrated guide to Epics as a companion to the Reckoners trilogy? I'm sure I'm forgetting something, or misprioritizing a few questions. So feedback is appreciated! 4

So feedback is appreciated! I might change "fear of losing a loved one" to "fear of forced or intentional abandonment" partly because it's a bit closer to what I'd intended and partly because I think that one has a better chance of having him say yes. I'd also add a question about why new Epics are rare by the time the series starts. The question list looks great, though! 1

I'd also add a question about why new Epics are rare by the time the series starts. The question list looks great, though! "Fear of abandonment" is actually a lot more straightforward and has fewer potential caveats than "fear of losing loved ones." So would you take offense if I bumped down its priority a little bit, seeing as we have no indication that his answer might be anything but yes? (Or we could ask "Is it possible for a specific song to become a symbol of an Epic's weakness.") I'll add the new Epics question to the list. I'm also considering adding "How many years after Calamity was Oregon destroyed," just to see how badly I screwed up the timeline; thoughts on that? 1

And I actually think the song question would be more helpful than the abandonment question, since as you said, there doesn't seem any reason why he would say no to the abandonment question. I mean, if Newton's fear of not living up to others' expectations could become her root fear as an Epic, then it seems like other relational fears could become root fears as well. I might also reword the Conflux question to something like "It is strongly implied Conflux faced his fear, but did this remove his weakness as well?" I think that's a good question. The timeline would be an easy thing to fix; we'd have to scrap our own timeline, but it would only take a few minor edits to fix fanon references. 1

The highest priority questions should be the one that most increase our knowledge of the setting at large, after all; I had to force myself not to include any queries about Epic necromancers in the list. I'll rephrase the Conflux question and add the timeline inquiry. Are there any questions about Epic tech that need to be added? I'm pretty sure there were some good questions on that front somewhere, but darned if I can remember them. 1

I think one was "Exactly how much and what type of genetic material is required to make a motivator?" A question about what Epics remember post-Rending--how vague are their memories, do they ever regain some of them, do they remember faces and some events more sharply than others or do they just wake up with a vague sense that something huge happened and they missed it--might help as well. And I don't think this is terribly important, but how do they feel, waking up from that? Do they feel better than ever, or like they have the worst hangover in the history of hangovers, or somewhere in between? 1

On the unique powers question, I think we're doing okay. Obliteration's heat-sapping and Curveball's unlimited ammo were both fairly unique, and when someone asked if Instabam's powers involved potatoes, Brandon just said "Sure, why not" instead of "What the...that power is too weird for the Reckonersverse." I still think it should be asked, though. 1
Kobold King he/him Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 The list is starting to get pretty big. Here's the FUNTIMES list now: Can you tell us anything about High Epic despots on the west coast? Can a weakness change? What would happen if an Epic was constantly exposed to his or her weakness? Does the Epic have to be aware of their weakness for it to affect them? If there was an Epic whose weakness was bodies of water, would his weakness activate if he unknowingly entered the vicinity of a lake? How many Epics have "unique" powers like Firefight or Mitosis? Exactly how much and what type of genetic material is required to make a motivator? How many cells of Reckoners are there, and do they operate globally or strictly in the Fractured States? When were the Reckoners established? How many countries didn't pass an equivalent to the Capitulation Act? Kobold King he/him Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I say start a new topic....or cut out the middleman and send it straight to Peter. Yay, new topic! Should it go to the Reckoners board, or is it RP-centric enough that it needs to be on this board? (Also, I know you read the list's first draft Edgedancer. Either you have nothing to add, or you have so much to add that it's taking you a lot of time to write it up. ) 1

Sirce Luckwielder he/him Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 (edited) I understand that, but all of them have some type of PI. Hawk will just resurrect, Jag's impervious to that and so is Smasher. Metalmech would heal. Desolation is the only one who'd be injured and I don't see him as a water drinking guy. He's more of a beer dude. I'm not saying that Winterspell isn't powerful, he definitely is, but he's just something they've seen, on a lesser scale, before. Would you mind posting his powerset again so that I don't have to dig through the threads for it? I realize that there's no way to get out of this without casualties and I slightly regret them attacking Mary like that. As it is, Smasher's commandos are already all dead. I don't want plot armor to be the only thing that saves my characters either, but they aren't easy to kill either. Thanks, first of all, for not getting offended with what I was saying. I realize how your Epics are going to pack a punch, I just want to make sure that we are on the same page with how this fight is going to go down. Having this many Epics who basically can't die is going to be tough to write. On your side, every guy has a PI. (How long does Hawk take to regenerate? That could potentially help to know.) On our side, we have several High Epics, but a few who aren't. I don't know how big weaknesses are going to play into this fight, but I don't mind giving mine up if it will help. I'm not saying that we make them publicly known, but perhaps in an Alan. If we also use those, we need to make sure that we work it in, rather than use it as a deux ex machina. I purposefully made Winterspell's to be hard to guess, but incredibly easy to exploit, so we can maybe use that to have your guys chink his armor. They'd be facing all of them at the same time, though, which gives plenty opportunities to work around some PIs. Desolation might be able to keep away from Winterspell but in the air he's a target for Deathgale. Hawk is done for, if Mary gets to him and there's a chance of his weaness triggering. Metalmech, while I can't judge on his weakness, because Mail-mi needs to hurry up with deciding on something already, is pretty much useless after all the tanks get destroyed and could be imprisoned in a giant block of ice. The same might happen to Jag and even if Winterspell doesn't have enough water on hand to do the same to him they would probably still end up backing him in a corner. Smasher easily has the best chances of getting away unscathed but even then his weakness actually would have a chance of triggering. I'm also not saying that it would be a curbstomp but the stackes are probably higher than you make it sound. I think that these are all factors that we need to look into. Are you guys okay with setting up some kind of Alan to talk about this? Edited March 16, 2015 by Sirce Luckwielder
Kobold King he/him Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I think it's general enough to be on the Reckoners board. Would you like tp shuffle the current priorities around a bit more first? I confess I didn't invest much effort in that aspect of the list.

Do you think I should ultimately post it on the Humble Appeal thread, or start a new topic on it somewhere? What I don't get a go? To get to the point: Some questions for example 8 and 10 ought to be RAFOs 14 is definetly a no. Epics don't start aware what exactly their weakness is, so it has to work for them to know and then they make the connection, if it would only work after they know it you would create a paradox making all Epics immune to their weakness. 16 I asked at the AMA and got a RAFO with a promise that it would come up in Calamity. 26 should be a yes, Mitosis'weakness was music afterall. From the top of my head I would like to add, if an Epic can use Motivator tech, if a weakness' trigger can require the Epic to care about others, like seeing a person they love ect hurt; or be selfless in general and just general information he can give us about the world, ike the state of Europe and how common and large trade routes still are. I think Megan rushing into the burning building to save David is an indicator that Epics are capable of selflessness; it just takes a lot of conscious effort. As for whether seeing someone they care about hurt triggering an emotional response.... It might depend on what their fear was, and even then their response might be less "They're hurt and I feel sorry for them" and more "They're hurt and I don't like seeing them hurt because it makes me sad and afraid." Kobold King he/him Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Edgedancer, I'll take a look at the questions you knocked off in a minute. Every question we can eliminate from the list now is one more useful question we can get someone to ask at a signing. I'll PM Lightsworn.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted March 16, 2015 Author Posted March 16, 2015 On a second look, 8 and 9 are just rewordings of the same question.

It might depend on what their fear was, and even then their response might be less "They're hurt and I feel sorry for them" and more "They're hurt and I don't like seeing them hurt because it makes me sad and afraid." That doesn't answer my question though. For one, Megan already had very low corruption at the time she rushed into the building, so she isn't a good indication of Epic behavior. Second, the behavior an Epic is capable of isn't the same as what the system allows as a weakness. using powers makes them selfish, why would weaknesses go against that? They could, it just seems counter-intuitive. On a second look, 8 and 9 are just rewordings of the same question. Not quite. Question 8 especially ask after the situation with Regalia, which would give hints at how Calamity works and is almost definetly a RAFO. Number 9 is more general and could also revere to him talking with Epics during their turning for example, similar and still likely a RAFO but not as extreme so as 8.
Fatebreaker he/him Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Question about the Ghoully Guy, If his weakness is religious symbols, and Funtimes believes in the Flying Spaghetti Monster, could he be defeated by Funtimes throwing Spaghetti at him? 2

But it is possible to love someone selfishly, and to care for them in a way that is more about your needs than theirs. It's possible to care for someone and provide for their needs because YOU have a need to be needed, or because YOU don't want to feel lonely, or for any number of reasons that all focus on you instead of the other person. I won't go into the details, but I know it's possible to become upset when someone is hurt or scared because YOU don't like seeing them that way. Maybe that behavior can look a lot like selflessness, but dig a little deeper and you see that it's all self-focused. Loving someone in a way that makes you value their needs over your own and loving someone in a way that satisfies your needs and not theirs can look similar, but the motives are all different. One is based in valuing the other person for who they are; the other is based in valuing the other person for what they can give you.
