Brightness Random she/her
Hello, everyone! I've been poking around this beautiful site and chuckling at your brilliance for a few weeks now, and I've finally decided to commit to getting an account. So here I am! I'm a huge fan of Brandon's work and love learning new tidbits about the Cosmere. I like listening to Brandon's books in audiobook format as it allows me to doodle (I like trying to illustrate characters and scenes while listening), but I love reading them too. I'm looking forward to spending time here, and humbly offer the following pun: Q: Why couldn't the Knights Radiant find the Assassin in White? A: Because they were Truthwatchers!
vineyarddawg
Welcome to the 17th shard! Don't accept cookies from seemingly well-meaning strangers. What's your favorite book and/or character?

Brightness Random she/her
Thanks for the tip, vineyarddawg! What about strangers with malicious intent? I think Words of Radiance would have to be my overall favorite, although trying to pick a favorite book is a bit like trying to choose a favorite organ. I don't think I could pick a favorite character... I really love them all. TenSoon, Vivenna, and Hrathen are all fascinating. Of course, so is everyone else. Thanks for the welcome, Queen Elsa! Guest
Welcome to 17S! Have an upvote and a delicious cookie! These perfidious...people got here before me and defiled this thread. The cookies are deelish. Eat them, eat them, here they are. Warbreaker and Siri for the win! What is your favorite magic system?
Brightness Random she/her
Snoopy, I'm afraid I'll be having dinner soon, and so should avoid spoiling my appetite with snacks that may or may not hold a hemalurgic charge. Perhaps another time? I think Forgery is probably my favorite magic system. My dream is to become a master Forger and travel to Nalthis, where I will hijack everyone's awakenings by rewriting their history...

Brightness Random she/her
Hemalurgy is fascinating. I'm looking forward to learning more about it in future books. By the way, I've always wondered, where does the Dark Alley get all the *cough* materials needed for all those cookies? It seems you have an almost limitless supply of baked goods...

Brightness Random she/her
I suppose I'm just naturally curious. It just seems that there is a lack of skaa misting running around the forums...
Guest
Crem! She figured it out! Major plan change, guys! Interesting theory...
Brightness Random she/her
It is curious how many mistborns there running around though. One would think they would be prime targets. (For marketing, of course. Even allomancers need delicious catered goods.) I've been poking around the Clans and Guilds page, but haven't been able to decide which to join. Any advice? The DA, being dedicated to hemalurgy, could be an interesting choice, but I think I should get to know the various factions better before jumping on board with any of them. Does the DA have any major allies or enemies?
Guest
The Anti-Bakery, for one. They are new, hot-headed, unschooled (on second thought, we actually did school them in the Anti-Bakery vs. The Dark Alley thread, which you should totally look at. It was back when my name was inexorablePanda...), and unprepared. I started the Root Beer Bar/Barrel/Guild recently. Completely objectively though, the DA is the most interesting and fun and hilarious and fascinating guild. You have to sell a cookie to join...looking forward to seeing you there!

Brightness Random she/her
Now I'm all conflicted. I'm more interested in how Ruin's influence and the potential for characters to gain new powers affect stories than spiking all the newbies, but the DA does seem like a fun group. Do you know if there's a club for puns and fan art? That may be slightly more... up my alley.
Lindel he/him
Have some upvotes for being clever, intelligent, and well-informed. I'd recommend taking a look at the Investiture-Challenged Awareness Society, which is dedicated to the study of Investiture in all forms, although we have a particular dedication to the field of Invested technology. The one drawback is that we're a bit... anti-Investiture. Sounds weird, given that we're scholars on the subject. Take a look at our thread and you'll see what I mean.
Guest
I see what you did there... Theories are a place for story-analysis. The DA does that sometimes, but we have fun mostly and wax and crack wise. We are the most fun group. There are several pun places, like the "cosmere puns (again)" thread. Just search for "cosmere puns" and stick--I mean, post to your heart's desire. Fan art goes to the gallery, and I am unaware of any threads about it...but that, I just don't know about. Edit: ninja'd. Well, the ICAS certainly has its share of scholars, including myself, but the DA is still more fun. Get out, Lindel! Brightness Random she/her
Thank you, Lindel. The Society seems to be a fascinating clan. After a bit more reading, I'll strongly consider joining. Though I am a lighteyes, so your anti-noble policy may not go too well for me. The one thing that bothers me is that you decry using investiture in most of it's forms. How do you experiment and expand on your knowledge without using investiture? Do you rely on those you challenge, the powerful magic users, to learn about the outer reaches of what is possible? Other than that issue, it seems wonderful. Your simple life style has a charming appeal, and it would be nice to join a guild that doesn't rely on heavily spiked members to lead. Excuse me if I don't join quite yet, as I'm still looking around.
Guest
No problem.* A lot of our victims labor under a false sense of free-will. *check the disclaimer in my sig.
Brightness Random she/her
No problem.* A lot of our victims labor under a false sense of free-will. See!? This is exactly why I would consider joining the Society. Normally I would love to join an investiture heavy group, but when the DA's out there building an army of mindless koloss out of unsuspecting new members, it seems wiser to play it safe. Have you even discovered new types of hemalurgic creatures? ...I thought not. What types of scholars are you, using cookies to gather an army?
Guest
We actually have. I discovered that a metal-laced bamboo spike can make a sentient Panda out of any living creature. Check the member list; my specialty is bamboo-related research. We are murderous scoundrels gentlemen and scholars.
Brightness Random she/her
I'm not sure what to make of this. Bamboo used in hemalurgy? (I hate to break it to you, but bamboo is a plant, not one of the 16 metals.) Sentient Pandas through hemalurgy... What attribute would you even use for that? I apologize, but unless this is what Brandon has been hiding from us about feruchemical aluminum, I must hold your claim with skepticism. (...And I did pick up on how you conveniently didn't deny my claims about the koloss army the DA is gathering, simply changing the subject instead.) Brightness Random she/her
I'm sorry, Snoopy, but I must ask: Bamboo cookies? Because if you're making bamboo spikes and calling them "cookies", that's what they are. Is the DA taking a new "healthy eating" marketing approach? Also, I must point out, based on this WoB, your bamboo spikes may mean there really is something to those zucchini-born. People ask about getting the power from metals and things, but that’s not actually how it works. The power’s not coming from metal. I talked a little about this before, but you are drawing power from some source, and the metal is actually just a gateway. It’s actually the molecular structure of the metal… what’s going on there, the pattern, the resonance of that metal works in the same way as an Aon does in Elantris. It filters the power. So it is just a sign of “this is what power this energy is going to be shaped into and give you.” When you understand that, compounding [in Alloy of Law] makes much more sense. We see the molecular structure of metals (or bamboo) allows for the channeling investiture, therefore, if you truly have discovered hemalurgic bamboo, it follows that other plants may hold similar potential. *sigh* I get a feeling that Hoid has already figured this out and has a beautiful vegetable garden on an otherwise uninhabited world...
