Zas678 he/him Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Many times, Brandon has mentioned a choice that Kaladin has made that is the biggest difference between Way of Kings Prime and Way of Kings. He tweeted this week that it was something he took that he didn't originally. It was also said that in the first book, Kaladin made the right choice, and in this one he took the wrong one. What do you guys think the choice was? Was it deciding to go into Amaram's army? Was it accepting the poison leaves that Syl gave? Was it taking the old man's sword? Was it not taking the Shardplate? What do you guys think?
leinton Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Pretty sure it's the Shards. It would make an entirely different story, and it is definitely the easier of the choices.
Juggernaut Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 I believe Brandon himself has said that it was the Shards.
Andrew the Great he/him Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 It also happens to fit all of the criteria. Though I'd certainly be interested to see what the story was like with Kaladin having the Shards. He'd suddenly be one of the most respected (or at least feared) individuals in Alethkar, and the entire plot line with Amaram that I'm assuming will come to a head when Amaram gets to the Shattered Plains would never have existed. Or any of Kaladin's plotline for this book, for that matter.
happyman he/him Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 The Shards seem like the most likely difference between them, although it's awful hard to imagine Way of Kings with Kalidin having taken the Shards. I suppose he still went to war, though? Definitely a good example of an alternate history, I can tell you that.
Silus - Shard of Flame he/him Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Brandon referred to it as him taking the hard route where before he'd taken the easy, not right or wrong. That being said, yeah, him taking the Shards seems to be right. And this topic is a bit spoilery, should we get a tag on this topic?
Neonarg Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 It would be really cool if their was a section in a later book where Kal explored what could have happened if he did take the armor. Kind of like a flashback/"left turn" in doctor who. He then realizes that the end result of his hardships was the same.
