Preservation and Ruin

Is it just me, or are Preservation and Ruin misnamed?

Stasis and Change seems to fit better to me, though not perfect still.

I'm sure I've missed something so I want to hear other opinions.

Preservation seems strongly biased towards humanity continuing.

I've always thought this was the infulence of the Shardholder, directing the Shard's intent.

Other possible options:

Structure and Entropy (Preservation wants to build up complexity and order, Ruin wants to reduce it all to dust)

Law and Chaos (the traditional duo, I don't like this one.)

Increase and Reduction (this would imply Allomancy is of Increase, Haemurgy of Reduction, and Feurchemy of both (or better yet neither)

I'm sorry, I have to disagree.

The names fit the intents perfectly. Ruin is active destruction. Evidence of that is abundant in all the books. Preservation, I think, may have retained a little more of his humanity than Ruin, but neither creation or destruction were within his abilities. He could still want to change things, but he couldn't do it by himself. Stasis may fit that, but it's not as elegant, I think. It implies a certain... detachment.

And honestly, none of the other names you've offered fit, really. Structure and Entropy aren't really opposed to each other. Law and Chaos just aren't right. (Great argument, right :P). Preservation can't create, so Increase doesn't fit. And, again, Reduction isn't active destruction.

The Shard are named quite well honestly. Ruin wants to destroy ll life and Ruin the world. Preservation wants to keep things as they are. To truly understand these Shards you have to go back to the cration of life on Scadrial. one would think creation was contrary to thre Intents but it gave Preservation something to protect and Ruin something to destroy.

Humans can both preserve and destroy, they have a little more Preservation thsn Ruin in them giving them sentience. This weakened Presevation, leading Ruin to think he would win but was ultimately part of Preservations plan to preserve thier creations by having a Human destroy Ruin becaus eh couldn't due to his Intent.

A human can use a Shard's power contrary to its aIntent up to point. Vin was able to use Preservation's power to destroy Ruin because she was part Ruin, however over time she would've been molded to the Intent of the Shard. It was affecting Rashek when he Ascended at the Well he made a change, pushing Scadrial closer to the Sun but the Power of Preservation influenced him to make these changess work while preserving life, especially humanity.
