IG-53 spotted the ship as it flew through Takodana's atmosphere. It continued flying, however, and showed no visible signs of landing.

Aerith got them cleared to land near a castle she hadn’t seen before. Master Kai had told her about this place, but she’d never been. Too seedy, he’d said. 

She hoped the tracker wasn’t waterproof. She’d elected to throw it in the lake.

L-8 handled the refuel while the group went up to the castle. Each of them received enough credits for a meal, but nothing more.

Maz Kanata's office was quiet, unlike the rest of the castle. The noise of Takodana was a hum through the thick stone walls. Maz was watching him like she already knew what he was going to say. Ryn didn't sit down. Maz didn't ask him to.

"You didn't call me here for cargo," she said.

"I did," Ryn said weakly.

Maz tilted her head. "No, you didn't."

They just sat there for a moment. It was like an answer. Ryn took a breath. "I saw something on Ord Mantell."

Maz waited for him to continue.

"There was an IG unit," he said. "They were hunting someone. A girl. Force-sensitive. She fought them. I think she got away."

Maz's eyes got narrower. "You didn't help her."

"I couldn't let them see me," he said. "I was talking to her. When I saw the droid, I ran away."

Maz nodded once. She wasn't surprised. "That's what survival looks like," she said. "Survival isn't the same as really living."

Ryn didn't say anything. Maz turned away like she was done with the conversation. "Go," she said. "Not because I'm done with you. Because you're done with yourself for now."

Ryn hesitated. "Maz..."

"Go," she said again, softer this time but final.

He left without arguing.

The bar was loud and warm when he stepped in. He didn't look for anyone. He didn't want to talk to anyone. He just ordered another glass of Whyren's Reserve. Sat down at the counter. He put his elbows on the wood and his chin in his hands. He stared at the amber liquid in his glass like it might make something make sense.

Viator walked into the castle and saw Ryn. That guy looks lonely. You know, Viator, you really shouldn't make another friend, you already have to many liabilities to begin with. You really shouldn't talk to him, or really interact with him at all-

"Hey! What's your name? Mine's Vivens." Viator smiled, sitting next to ryn. "Nice to meet you!"

He looked up to see who was asking and jumped back, eyes wide, toppling his stool in the process.

"How the hell did you track me here? Weren't you on Ord Mantell with that girl selling rugs? Have you been tracked by that droid?"

Ryn picked up his stool and set it upright, and continued in a lower tone, "Who in the name of the crime lords of Nal Hutta are you?"

She followed Vivens inside, however peeled off from the group early on. Whether doing so was wise, she was unsure. 

“Finally, you’ve shown up.” Huttese.

She stopped and turned her head slightly. 

“You’d think it would take less than five years to come here.”

”Five years is nothing to one who has lived a thousand.”

”Still impolite to keep someone waiting.”

Aerith turned more. “I wasn’t aware you were waiting.”

”How often did Rylan come here and you never once thought to do so.”

Well. That was a punch in the gut. And it angered her so much she switched back to Basic unwittingly. “The entire time I knew him, he told me to avoid this place! That it was too dangerous for someone as young as me!”

”You say that as though you think yourself a child still.”

Aerith paused, and Maz beckoned her. “Come. We have much to discuss.” She turned and started down a spiral staircase.  

Aerith followed.

He started walking quickly towards the stairway.

He keyed his comms again. 

"Maz? Where are you?"

He rubbed his eyes, wondering if Aerith would ask him why he was so worried about being followed. He looked over at Maz, wondering what to do.
