I read the books in my own language, not in the original language, so it’s also possible that some of this comes from misunderstandings caused by translation.

In the prologue of Elantris (10th Anniversary Edition), we see Hoid near the pool, with something that is described as similar to an Seon - but with distorted lines inside it. I thought this was the Spern  that he bonded on Roshar.

But… someone reminded me that some of the characters from Elantris appear on Roshar, in the interludes, when they are searching for the stranger from the Purelake. They are Elantrians (I don’t remember which ones right now), so this would have to be after the fixing of Elantris.

In the epilogue, he does not have his spren. Instead, he has a Skaze, which is Dominion's version of a Seon.

The current in-world chronology of published books (to the best of our knowledge) is:

Spoiler
  • Dragonsteel series (forthcoming)
  • White Sand
  • Elantris and The Hope of Elantris
  • The Emperor's Soul
  • Mistborn Era 1
  • Warbreaker
  • Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell
  • The Stormlight Archive (first arc)
  • Mistborn Era 2
  • The Stormlight Archive (second arc - forthcoming)
  • Mistborn Era 3 (forthcoming)
  • Tress of the Emerald Sea (estimated)
  • The Sunlit Man (estimated)
  • Yumi and the Nightmare Painter (estimated)
  • Isles of the Emberdark (estimated)
  • Mistborn Era 4 (forthcoming)

Brandon has said he intends to release a more detailed chonology before Stormligth 6. E. g. How many years between the events of Elantris and Mistborn (Secret History spoilers - especially sicne the Ire appear to be suffering the Reod when Kelsier sees them)

Hope that helps

It's fun, research about the Cosmere.

Where can I read more about Skazes?

We do not yet have much about the Skaze - but here are the Coppermind page and the collected WoBs on them.

Stormlight Archive and Elantris Spoilers:

Spoiler

Like TrueSpren, Seons and Skaze are Splinters of a Shard. However, while the Radiant Spren are all both Honor and Cultivation (or Honor, Cultivation and Odium for the Enlightened Radiant Spren) - Seons are just Devotion and Skaze are just Dominion. In Elantris, Raoden repeatedly mentions he cannot find how to make a Seon - that was forshadowing that they are not "made" at all - they were created when Odium Splintered Aona and Skai.

Note that the "Mistborn Era 2" mentioned above is NOT the Wax and Wayne books. Brandon hadn't started those when the timeline above was created.

Yes, that Era 2 is Wax and Wayne - which takes place (WaT Spoilers).

Spoiler

Mostly during the last few chapters of Wind and Truth - Hoid is interviewing for the Coachman job at the end of WaT and that takes place during the events of Alloy of Law.

You can tell because it mentions all four Eras for Mistborn. It is only old WoBs mentioning three Eras that do not account for Wax and Wayne; which was not in the original outline, then had AoL as a stand-alone single story to bridge Era 1 to then-Era 2, and eventually became Era 2 and "Information Age - 80s Spy Thriller" officially became Era 3.

More recent comments from him have implied that the exact timeline for where Elantris takes place won't be locked in until he writes the sequels, just to avoid causing any issues for those books:

Spoiler

Argent

We've always understood Elantris to be one of the earliest books in the Cosmere, but we see Kaise as Codenames in The Lost Metal, one of the latest books. Has the timeline contracted significantly, or are we just looking at the typical Shadesmar time dilation tricks?

Brandon Sanderson

So, here's thing, Argent. I'm not going to be able to give you strict timelines until I write Elantris 2 and 3. So my plan, originally, which might have been a bad plan, was Elantris 2 to take place some ten or fifteen years after Elantris 1. Maybe a little less than that. But years have passed. It was called Dakhor, in my notes. And then for 3 to be hundreds of years later. I don't know if that's the right move anymore, and if 3 isn't hundreds of years later, then where we slot Elantris in is going to change because of where I need certain characters to be in some of these things, and certain things to happen. We are getting really close to where this is going to be nailed down and locked down, and I'll get locked down. Probably right when we start Era 3 is when all of this is just gonna start... I've promised you guys a timeline. Once we've released that, we don't want to retcon it, does that make sense? So that's why we're waiting to release it.

But Kaise does have some time dilation going on, though. Though I say her name wrong because I'm not from Sel. But yeah, she has time dilation going on, she is... yeah. More time has passed than the ten or so years that... she's like what, 7 in Elantris? And she's like young 20s now, visibly, the age that she appears. I believe, something like that. So yeah, there you go. There's some information for you on that. I'm playing loose and free with this until I really get down to writing these. My loose plan is still write Mistborn Era 3 book 1, Elantris 2, Era 3 book 2, Elantris 3, Era 3 book 3. Five years of writing there that I can't even really think about until I've got Stormlight 5 in Tor's hands, if not your hands.

YouTube Spoiler Stream 5 (Dec. 2, 2022)

He's also said that he wants the Elantris sequels and Era 3 Mistborn coming out around the same time, which could hint at some connection there but I'd expect that they just both give background information on shards or cosmere-wide organizations that complement each other well.

I remember a few years ago there was a theory going around that all of the Dor swirling around in the cognitive realm around Sel was causing time dilation there which could lead to some weirdness on where it falls in the timeline, though I recall the main reason for those theories had been that he'd specifically mentioned large amounts of investiture causing time dilation a few times so it seemed important, but looking back that could have just been him already having the current Roshar situation in mind.
