picklenick-dev Posted February 10 Posted February 10 (edited) Hey everyone! ^_^V TL;DR: Built an interactive timeline map for Mistborn Original Trilogy with character tracking, spoiler protection, and city zoom. Still super early (WIP) — looking for feedback, domain name suggestions, and let me know if you'd like milestone updates! Will be fully open sourced on v1.0 release! --- I'm a first-time reader of Brandon Sanderson's work. I just finished the Wheel of Time series and was introduced to Sanderson through his work on the final books. Took me 2 years to read those amazing books. I was trying to decide which books to read next, but I really enjoyed Sanderson's writing style and dove right into the Mistborn trilogy. Coming from WoT, I really missed having a good timeline visualization tool. There was an excellent one for the Wheel of Time that helped me track character movements and understand the geography. When I started Mistborn, I found Cosmere Maps which was okay, but it hasn't been updated in four years and was missing some features I really wanted. So... I built my own! Mistborn Atlas I used Isaac Stewart's official Final Empire maps as the base - I liked his cartography work and wanted to stay true to the official geography. Mistborn Atlas Features: Interactive Maps: Full Final Empire world map with 38+ locations (cities, ashmounts, landmarks) Detailed city maps for Luthadel, Urteau, and Fadrex City Easy switching between world and city views via dropdown Timeline & Character Tracking: Timeline playback through all three books (The Final Empire, Well of Ascension, Hero of Ages) Real-time character movement visualization across the map "Follow mode" - track individual characters with auto-opening popups during playback Character paths showing their journey throughout the story Chapter-by-chapter navigation with slider control Spoiler Protection & Customization: Characters only appear after they debut (by book/chapter) Toggle for "Show All" if you don't care about spoilers Show/hide locations and paths Character visibility filters Color-coded markers for easy identification User Experience: Fully responsive design (works great on mobile!) Information panels with rich location descriptions and lore Click locations/characters for detailed popups Play/pause timeline with smooth animations Book switching (TFE, WoA, HoA) with automatic chapter reset Saving where you were last when you visited the page Mobile friendly, a good partner to have while reading. Internationalization: Support for 10 languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, French, Arabic, Bengali, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese Auto-detects browser language Language is set via the `lang` URL parameter (e.g. `?lang=es` for Spanish) `/?lang=en` is the default and does not need to appear in the URL Easy language switching via dropdown Current Status - Super Early WIP! Fair warning: this is still super super early! I'm actively working on it over the next couple of weeks. Think of this as a sneak peek rather than a finished product! Here's roughly where things stand: Location Mapping: ~70% done — most major cities, ashmounts, and key landmarks are placed, but some minor locations still need plotting Descriptions & Lore Accuracy: ~50% verified — going through all location and event descriptions to ensure accuracy and consistency with the books Character Movement Data: ~50% done — the movement system is built and working, but only a fraction of the chapter-by-chapter character tracking has been entered so far Known Issues: Popup positioning for markers near map edges can be a bit janky, and the timeline playback transitions between chapters need to be smoother — working on both! Translations: Completing translations for all supported languages (currently English is prioritised and when finished I can translate to all other languages with the help of AI) Polish: Fixing bugs and refining the user experience There's still a lot of data entry and verification ahead, but the foundation is solid and I'm chipping away at it daily. Your feedback, bug reports, and suggestions are incredibly valuable as I work toward v1.0! Would you like me to keep updating this thread (or post follow-ups) as I hit milestones? Happy to share progress updates if there's interest! The Future Right now this is just a passion project I've hosted on a temporary Azure address while reading through the series. If this gets some support/interest from the community, I'd love to buy a proper domain and host it publicly. I'm currently calling it "Mistborn Atlas" but I'm open to other names — if you have a cool suggestion for the domain, drop it in the comments! Some ideas I've been tossing around: mistbornatlas.com scadrialatlas.com finalempiremap.com cosmereatlas.com (if I expand to other Sanderson worlds later) Open to lore-themed ideas too — anything that fits the Mistborn/Scadrial vibe. What sounds best to you? I'm still making my way through Hero of Ages (no spoilers please! ), but I wanted to share this with the community and get your thoughts. Would this be useful for other readers? Any features you'd want to see added? Tech Stack (for the curious): React, TypeScript, Leaflet.js, SCSS Open Source: The entire project will be completely open sourced once v1.0 is complete. The full source code will be available on GitHub for anyone to fork, contribute to, or learn from. If you want to collaborate on translations, movement data, or features, reach out! A Note on Location Accuracy Since this is still early days, not all locations and descriptions have been fully verified yet. I've placed things as accurately as I can based on the books and the official maps, but I'm still working through everything and some things are definitely off or incomplete. If you spot anything that looks wrong — a misplaced location, an inaccurate description, a lore mistake — please let me know! Once the project is open sourced, you'll be able to contribute fixes directly via pull requests or just right here. Debug Mode: Add ?dbg=1 to the URL to see live coordinates as you hover over the map. Click to freeze coordinates and copy them to your clipboard. I used this tool to plot all the map points, and your help verifying locations would be greatly appreciated! Support the Project This is a free fan project that I build and maintain in my spare time. If you're enjoying this and want to see it grow, you can buy me a coffee on Ko-fi . Your support would help me: Buy a domain name and hosting to make it publicly accessible Keep the site running and ad-free forever Expand to other Cosmere series (Stormlight Archive, anyone?) Continue adding features and improvements No pressure at all — I'll keep building this either way! But every little bit helps turn this passion project into something even better for the community. Shatter He/Him Posted February 10 Posted February 10 Hi! As I said on Reddit, this is a really cool project and I'd like to see where it goes in th future! 1
Frustration Posted February 10 Posted February 10 (edited) That's amazing. You should probably check out the Interactive map and timeline for Roshar, but this is really cool, and a step in the right direction for us. I highly recommend against using AI for the translations, because each of the books create a lot of their own words, and each translator does it pretty differently. For example in Portuguese Dustrbringer would be Trazedor de po, but the Portuguese translation calls the Pulverizadores. There's an entire thread from way back when about the odd translations they use for the books in other languages. Edited February 10 by Frustration
Qianweilian He/him Posted February 10 Posted February 10 Tried to look at it at school and: My guess is that they auto block azure addresses for some reason. Maybe you could work with admin and set up up with the 17th shard, like the Roshar map. 1
picklenick-dev Posted February 10 Author Posted February 10 (edited) Thanks! I'm pushing updates while I'm working so the temporary website will (almost) be completely updated. Just this minute I pushed in a few changes and added character icons. Have decided that I will post milestone updates on reddit and here. Summarise what I have done since last milestone. 12 minutes ago, Qianweilian said: Tried to look at it at school and: My guess is that they auto block azure addresses for some reason. Maybe you could work with admin and set up up with the 17th shard, like the Roshar map. Ah. Well this is just a temporary address while it is a WIP. Will move it to a proper domain when I'm finished with the first version. Hope you can browse the website on your phone or check it out from somewhere else ^^ 32 minutes ago, Frustration said: That's amazing. That's why I think AI can perhaps do 50% of the ground job. But for sure, here the community would be a great asset. Wouldn't mind at all for people who are billungal to help with it. I'm Swedish myself and can do all the Scandinavian languages, English, German and Japanese ^^ Edited February 10 by picklenick-dev

It is cool, though very similar from a cursory look. Perfect question Most of the story takes place inside Luthadel in the first book. With this map you can go inside the city and follow the characters chapter by chapter. I have added and will add location information to many locations. Cant see that on cosmeremaps. Really liked the maps and details from Isaac and wanted to something with those illustrations. Will try and add translations so its more available for a broader audience. When following a character you get a brief summary what the character is up to in that chapter Outlining of where all the characters are with the travel path Hehe, just scrambled some thoughts quick on my mobile phone. Sorry if is incoherent:D
picklenick-dev Posted February 14 Author Posted February 14 Milestone 1 Update! Falling Ash, Allomantic Glyphs I Finished the Trilogy! First things first.... I finished Hero of Ages. I'm not going to say anything spoilery, but... yeah ^^ That said, I'm planning a full re-read where I'll take notes on character locations, events, and descriptions chapter by chapter. A lot of the movement data right now is based on memory, research, and the Coppermind wiki, but I want to get it right. A careful re-read is the best way to make sure the timeline is airtight and every description is accurate to the source material. What's New This Week Falling Ash & Creeping Mists Proud of this one Behind the map there is now an atmospheric layer — ash flakes drift down across the screen and mists creep and roll across the landscape, just like in the books. The ash and mist are interactive too.... move your cursor (or finger on mobile) and the particles react, almost like you're Steelpushing them out of the way. There's a toggle in the controls if you want to turn it off. The loading screen also got an overhaul — it now has its own falling ash and a smooth progress bar, and when it finishes the mists dissolve away to reveal the map. Little cinematic touch. Character Tracking System — It Works! The core mechanic of following characters across the map is now solid. You can: - Follow a character as the timeline plays — the map pans to them and shows what they're doing at each chapter (still early and I will fix it on the re-read) - Pause and read — when following someone, the timeline pauses at each chapter so you can read the event before moving on - Browse movement history — character popups now have "Earlier / Later" buttons to flip through past events without leaving the popup - See where characters overlap — when multiple characters are at the same location, their markers spread out so you can see everyone - Hovering highlights paths — hover on a character and everything else dims, making it easy to trace their journey across the map There's still a lot of movement data to enter (that re-read will help!), but the system itself is working properly and I'm really happy with how it feels. Allomantic Symbol Map Markers This was a big visual retheme. All the location markers on the map now use Allomantic metal symbols from Isaac Stewart's Steel Alphabet artwork — so instead of generic coloured dots, each location type has its own glyph on a metallic disc: - Dominance Seats get Gold symbols - Ashmounts use Atium (deep rose) - Fortresses use Steel (blue) - Cities, towns, and villages each have their own distinct metal and colour The legend panel was redesigned to match, and everything uses in-world Mistborn terminology now — "Dominance Seat" instead of "capital", "Safe Haven" instead of "hideout", "Fortress" instead of "stronghold", that kind of thing. Tons of New Locations Added a bunch of locations that were missing from the map: - World map: Valtroux, Haverfrex, Longsfollow, Chakatah, Statlin City, Chardees, Urbene, Erlac, North Seran, River Seran, Garthwood, the Kandra Homeland, Arguois Caverns, Terris Mountains, Tincut Fastness, High Villages, Straff's War Camp, Koloss Camp, Tresting Plantation, the Imperial Canal, and the Burnlands - Luthadel: 20 new city landmarks including Keep Elariel, Fountain Square (the Square of the Survivor!), the Canton of Inquisition, Sootwarrens, The Twists, and more - Urteau: 14 landmarks including Spook's Hideout, the Burning District, and the Citizen's Estate - Fadrex City: 14 landmarks including the Storage Cavern, Yomen's Palace, and the Conway Canal Also repositioned several locations that were off based on the source material, and added placement warnings for locations where the exact position is uncertain. Better Visibility & Polish - Markers are larger and more distinct — each location type has its own colour now instead of similar greys - Hover effects are cleaner — a soft glow instead of the brightness boost - Markers scale with zoom level so they're readable at any distance - Cities you can explore show a magnifying glass badge so it's obvious they're clickable - Spoiler mode hides character portraits and names before their debut — you just see a "?" placeholder - The loading screen got a cinematic polish pass - Lots of small UI fixes for mobile and desktop Updated Status Here's roughly where things stand now: - Location Mapping: ~75% done — most major and many minor locations are placed across all three maps - Descriptions & Lore Accuracy: ~55% verified — ongoing, the re-read will help a lot here - Character Movement Data: ~40% done — system is built and working great, just needs more data entry - Visual Theme: ~90% done — Allomantic symbols, atmospheric effects, and marker styling are in a good place - Polish & Bug Fixes: Ongoing — hover interactions, popup positioning, and mobile UX are much improved What's Next - The re-read — going back through all three books with notes to nail down every character location and event description - More movement data — filling in the chapter-by-chapter tracking for all six main characters - Description verification — making sure every location popup accurately reflects the source material - Domain name — still deciding! I'm leaning toward mistbornatlas.com or scadrialatlas.com. What do you think? - Open source release — once v1.0 is in good shape, the whole thing goes on GitHub If you have feedback, spot any lore mistakes, or just want to say hi — drop a comment! Every bit of input helps make this better. Support the Project This is a free fan project that I build and maintain in my spare time. If you're enjoying it and want to see it keep growing, you can buy me a coffee on Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/picklenickdev Your support helps me: - Buy a proper domain name and keep the site hosted - Keep it running and ad-free forever - Expand to other Cosmere series down the road (Stormlight Archive, anyone?) - Keep adding features, data, and improvements No pressure at all — I'll keep building this either way. But every little bit helps turn this passion project into something even better for the community. 1
picklenick-dev Posted February 25 Author Posted February 25 I open-sourced it yesterday https://github.com/picklenick-dev/mistbornatlas @Frustration https://github.com/picklenick-dev/mistbornatlas/issues/5 I open a issues for every language and this is a link to the portugese issue. Feel free to ask me anything or if you want to help it would be hugely apperciated. But that being said, I haven't finished with the timeline yet (you see that on the readme). I have only secured the timeline to chapter 13 in the final empire. Will work on this the next couple of months. That means some description and movement details will change in the english version. 1
