I do not think we use Invision's "Group" feature, so this is likely a legacy from the software on which our forums are built.

I don't think I have set any groups to have anonymous posting, but that is possible for me to do.

We absolutely use groups! These are foundational to the forums. For example, you know how on your posts it says "Members"? That's a group! Other groups are the various staff groups or Patrons, etc. Permissions and other things can depend on group. 

If you do Advanced Search -> Member Search, you can see a list of the groups.
